Victor Carl Mamich
Victor Carl Mamich, Sr., 81, of Cove, Texas passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 suddenly at his apartment in Webster, Texas.
Vic was born on February 25, 1942, to Joseph Mamich and Sophie Mamich Duessel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Allegheny High School where he was active in football, receiving the MVP award and All-City accolades while playing in the orchestra and band. He then attended Austin Peay State University with a full football scholarship. Upon graduation, Vic entered Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI and was commissioned as Ensign assigned to the USS Lexington CVS-16. During a leave, his friend Pete Giovenco introduced him to a fellow teacher, Frances Wilhere. During his time aboard ship, Vic and Fran communicated via mail, and he often said he received more letters than anyone since Fran was a dedicated writer and would also have her whole class send notes. As their love grew, he chose to be released from active duty. Vic and Fran were married on May 25, 1968, and they had four children in quick succession. Vic worked for US Steel in Pittsburgh, then transferred to Ohio, where he received his master’s degree while working and continuing his duties in the Naval Reserves. In 1977, he was transferred to Cove, Texas. There he served as Cove Alderman from 1985-1995. He happily retired from Goodyear and retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in 2002. Golf was one of Vic’s favorite pastimes. He never kept score, never minded playing alone, but always enjoyed when one of his golfing buddies joined him on the course. Fran and Vic loved to travel, which they did extensively and proudly on a budget. This was made possible thanks to his military service and his son’s position in the aviation industry. He loved Fran completely and absolutely, caring for her through her long battle with cancer until her death in 2015. As Vic got older, he developed a great appreciation of nature, whether it was a bird of prey in flight or clouds in formation. He also took pleasure in visiting the library and perusing the free books.
Vic Mamich is survived by his children, Sharon Mamich (Jose Argueta), Jane Mamich, and Victor Mamich (Aimee); brother-in-law Tom Wilhere (Michelle); sisters-in-law Shirley Mamich, Mary Lou Chorazewicz (Bernie), Paula Wilhere, Claire Wilhere, Linda Wilhere, Sue Wilhere, and Nancy Urbanek (John); nephews and nieces Mike, Janice, Charles, Michael, Dennis, Rose, Melanie, and Marlo; as well as many friends who loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter Barbara Mamich, brother Joe Mamich, brothers-in-law Charles and Jim Wilhere.
Funeral mass will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church at 15500 El Camino Real in Webster on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 10:30 AM.

From the first time that we met Vic, everyone in our family loved him. Our parents thought he was the perfect match for Fran and they were right. I liked pretending that I was Fran when he would call her on the phone and tell him all of the places I wanted to go. I’m sure he knew it was me but he played along anyway. He was a good sport. I will always miss him. He is reunited with his precious Fran now. May they both rest in peace.
