Tommy Oliver James

Tommy Oliver James, a resident of Friendswood, Texas, passed away on December 27, 2020. Tom, as everyone new him, was born on August 12, 1941 in Texarkana, Texas to the late Isaac (Ike) and Veleria Wall James. He lived his life as a child in Palestine, Texas and then moved to Houston as a teenager.

Tom was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers and served in the Vietnam War where he earned the Bronze Star and Army Medal of Commendation for meritorious service from 1967-68.

Tom spent the majority of his working career with Fluor Global where he traveled the world and made lifelong friendships. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved the outdoors. His wish is to have his ashes scattered over the small lake on property he and his wife own in Yorktown, Texas.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Susan. Son Douglas James, daughter and son-in-law, Suzy and Brent Caudill, daughter Christi James and son Mark James, grandchildren Kevin James, Ben Caudill, Ava Janczak and Cohen Janczak. He leaves behind lifelong friend, David Billingsley, his cousin, Phil Wilson, and his brother-in-law Tommy Gust who he loved as his brothers.

The family is so thankful for the wonderful care Tom received by all the healthcare professionals in the ICU at Houston Methodist Clear Lake as he bravely fought and finally lost the battle with COVID-19.

There will be a private memorial service later next year as the times shift with more certainty. In lieu of flowers, feel free to give to a charity of your choice. Tom loved and supported No Kid Hungry.

  1. Susan, I was so sad to learn of Tom’s passing. He was a true inspiration and a man of whom I looked up to with the utmost respect. He always provided mentorship for me with everything that should be of importance in my life’s decisions. He brought laughter with a witty humor and logic when more serious topics were to be discussed. I will forever miss him!
I’m hoping time will allow you and your family to heal from your hurt and sorrow.
May Our Good Lord Bless You…

  2. It was a privilege and honor to know Tom at Fluor. I met him in 1987 and we had long talks about daughters and sons, hunting in Christoval, and payroll. He was always concerned that I entered his project’s payroll so the people on his project were paid on time. Will think of Tom and you when I head to Yorktown in February.
Praying for you, Susan, and all your family.
    Regards

  3. Tom was a mentor and supporter of mine. When I was learning to lead, he was my model. I had the pleasure of learning from him early in my career and finally, to work with him again on the Katrina/Rita recovery project. I also remember him as a role model on how to retire and live the simple life he loved. My condolences to you and your family, Susan. My wish for you is that you find Peace.

  5. Knowing and working for Tom was a blessing. He mentored and coached so many people including me. Just a Prince of a Gentleman and the consummate manager. He loved people and it showed. The world needs a lot more people like Tom that is a certainty. We had so many chats and discussions about so many topics over the years. God keep you my friend and you will be missed by so many.
