Rodney Guy Johnson

Rodney Guy Johnson, born August 5, 1966, in Panama City, FL, passed away Friday, October 11, 2024, at his home in Friendswood, TX, after a battle with brain cancer. Rodney was known for his quick wit and acts of service, rooted in a rich curiosity and passion for humanity. He earned a BS degree in accounting/finance from Georgetown University and an MBA from Southern Methodist University and spent his career exploring and discussing economics, finance, and the world.

Rodney is preceded in death by father Jerre Johnson and brother Paul Johnson. He is survived by cherished wife Brook, the brightest light in his world, his kids (whom he loved with everything he had), son and daughter-in-law Jacob and Megan Johnson, daughter and son-in-law Nora Johnson Menendez and Matthew Menendez, daughter Mollie Johnson and partner Dylan Van Demark, three grandchildren, mother and stepfather Betty Jo and Dan McCann, stepmother Vicki Johnson, and sister and brother-in-law Juliet and Mike Burton.

Rodney was a lifelong athlete who enjoyed tennis, golf, cycling, snow sports, sailing, and everything in between. If it could be shared with a friend or loved one and involved the outdoors, Rodney was always on board. Rodney would never turn down a game, especially one with clever banter or strategic play. If no games were to be had, he made up his own, and his infectious energy pulled everyone in. His breadth of knowledge and genuine interest sparked deep conversations that enriched all who knew him. Rodney’s legacy is exemplified by every action he took; he was always looking to the next thing he could do to show compassion for others and, in his words, “live the dream.”

A celebration of his life will take place Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Bay Harbour United Methodist Church, League City, TX. In lieu of flowers, please donate to CASA Galveston (https://casagalveston.org/give/), a community advocating for foster children at which Rodney volunteered, or Everybody’s Place benefiting the homeless (https://everybodysplace.net/give/).

  1. I met Rodney in the mid 1990s. At first it was a professional relationship. He was incredibly smart and an amazing speaker and presenter. He was the rare person who could present complex economic ideas in a way that was easy to understand and relatable. We developed a friendship over the years which I cherished. I enjoyed visiting with him over the phone, via email and texts. He was so incredibly proud of his wife and children and I was fortunate to learn something about them. After his diagnosis he was determined to fight it but retain his dignity and sense of humor. The world is a better place because of Rodney’s short time here. I let him know the last couple of years that I was praying for him, his family and his doctors and nurses. I am praying for you now to feel God’s presence as you mourn your husband, father, grandfather and father in law. I’m out of town on a long planned trip so I’ll be unable to attend the funeral.

  2. My heart breaks to learn the news of Rodney’s passing. He was an amazing CASA and so lo ed by each of the kiddos he Advocated for. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and the families of the kiddos he served. I hope to be at the service’s tomorrow as soon as I can locate the time of the service.
