Robert Lee “Bobby” Houston, Sr.
Bobby Houston was born in Galveston, TX on January 25, 1936 and passed away on January 16, 2016 at home surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents Tomas A. and Lillian W. Houston, a sister Lois Houston Dodson, and a daughter Glenda Faye Houston Haynes. Shortly after High School, Bobby married Helen and began raising a family. He is survived by his wife Helen Peikert Houston of 61 years, brother Tomas A. Houston, II and wife Lou, daughter Prissy Houston, son Robert L. Houston Jr. and partner Donald Hurley, six grandchildren, Jackie Lee and husband Howard, John Haynes and wife Antoinette, Rodney Haynes and wife Meagen, Wendy Pickford and husband Bobby, Michael Barker and wife Katie, and Colby Barker, 16 great grandchildren, one great-great grandson and numerous family and friends. Bobby began his career as a paper boy and eventually worked up to becoming a sacker at A&P Grocer. After marriage, he began a career in banking at W.L. Moody bank in Galveston, where he learned his business skills and his love of coin collecting. He then began buying and selling real estate, left the bank and became a distributor of the Houston Chronicle in Galveston. Eventually he left the Island taking his family with him to Pasadena, TX where he became a successful businessman. He later retired and ended up living in Huntsville, Texas. It was not until recently that he moved back to the Island which he loved so much. During his lifetime, he was a believer in helping those less fortunate. At one time he was on the board of the March of Dimes Galveston Chapter, donated food and money to the homeless, and would continue to support many different organizations with a cash donation once a year up until his death. Bobby was an active father and was the coach of the baseball and softball teams of each of his three children at one time or another. He loved sports and most of all the Texas Longhorns and The Dallas Cowboys. Although the last few years of his life he was not able to get out as much, he was a true believer in God and would not hesitate to remind his family of the importance of attending church and getting right with the Lord above. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 18, 2016, at James Crowder Funeral Home, La Marque. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at the funeral home, with Pastor Grady Sanders officiating. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery, Hitchcock, Texas. Pallbearers will include Tomas A. Houston III, Mike Barker, Sr., Josh Barker, John Haynes, Colby Barker, and Broderick Jones.
