  4. To his wife Sweta, Son Ayush, Family and Friends,

I am sorry to hear about Arun’s untimely demise. He was a very dear friend, we were lab mates during our Ph.D. program at BHU. After that we again happen to be together at Houston during our Post doctoral research. For me he was very special, we could bond together due to our common liking for music, sher-o-shayari, and more so he was from my native place Bihar. He was a wonderful and kind hearted man. We friends would miss him immensely. I pray to God to rest him in peace and give strength to his father, sisters (back at home), his wife Sweta and son Ayush, to able to cope-up with this pain. May God Bless.

  17. It was heartbreaking to hear about the demise of Rana from this earthly world. He was my guru Bhai. We shared lab and mentors during our PhD program at the school of biotechnology, BHU. We shared many precious moments of our life journey overlapping in the lab. He was always cheerful and impressive, whether discussing science, music, Shayari, or life lessons. He was kind and helpful. He was the only one who offered the “Anil and Alok” duo to stay the first night in his dorm at Dalmia hostel on our joining BHU as research scholars. He fought for us with the warden of the hostel and succeeded in having our rooms allotted to us the next day. We were the two Delhiites who joined the PhD program at BHU on the same day. As time passed, an intense but sublime relationship of love and hate developed among the three of us. We were the only ones from the lab to participate in the marriage of Rana’s sister. Rana was a good cook. His Litti Chokha was delicious. In the hostel mess, we savored “Rana chutney”, the recipe of which was created by him. Rana was a man of many tastes and a fond lover of music.

Many a night, on the roof of our hostel, he would play the flute, and “Anil and Alok” were his eager audience. He would take us to classical music concerts at Sankat Mochan Temple. It was there that I first listened live to the Santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and developed a taste for it. Rana had multifaceted talents. Watching him indigenously make bamboo flutes from scratch, with holes drilled precisely for flawless notes, was fun. He gifted flutes to both of us as parting gifts in 1998.

Time flew by, and I did not see him again until New Year’s eve of 2017. He welcomed me dearly at his home as if we had never parted. One day he expressed his wish to go deeper into the science of MHC polymorphism and TCR repertoire. He thus joined my laboratory of lymphocyte function to explore his flavor of immunology at the beginning of March 2020. Unfortunately, soon after that COVID-19 pandemic started, and he fell sick. He returned to Houston in May 2020 to come back when the pandemic was over. He will not come back. Only his memories will survive.

I pray for the departed soul of Rana Arun, and my condolences are with Shweta, Ayush, family, and friends at this time of grief. Om, Shanti, Shanti, Shanti!
