Michael Lunn Mumey
Michael Lunn Mumey, 81, of Texas City, passed away Saturday December 26, 2020 in Texas City.
Michael was born December 6, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa, to Norman and Mary Mumey. He has been a resident of Texas City for 57 years, retiring as a Captain with the Texas City Fire Department, after 32 years.
Mike was a caring and devoted husband who loved to spoil his one and only love, Rose. To his children, he was the fun-loving Dad who always made them laugh, and their protector who always made them feel safe. He would usually work 1 or 2 different jobs, along with his firefighting career, but during the summer, would pile the family into the car and travel the country.
Mike started his commitment to helping people at a young age from being a boy scout to a scout leader, and an acolyte throughout high school, serving the Bishop of Davenport, Iowa.
Shortly after moving to Texas City, he joined the fire department and began his Professional career, and for the next 32 years, gave generous and responsible service to the citizens of Texas City.
He was active in volunteering at Our Lady of Fatima School and St. Mary’s Church, both in manual maintenance and as Past Chairman of the Parish Council and Past President of the Men’s Club. During his time as Pres. of the Men’s Club, he was responsible for, among other things, getting the Bingo games started at St. Mary’s.
Mike had been a member and volunteer for the TC/LM Chamber of Commerce Golden Division for many, many years. He was willing to do anything to help their events become successful while always giving 120%. No job was ever too small or too big. He did whatever needed to be done, without having to be asked. And he did it cheerfully.
He was in the first EMT class, and taught First Aid classes through the American Red Cross to nurses at COM as well as the fire department.
Mike was a member of the Heights Fire & Rescue Squad and served as treasurer of that organization for many years.
He served on the Executive Board and Negotiating Committee for the International Assn. of Fire Fighters for Local 1259, and was the longest living member. He drew up the first contract between the City and the Union after much research from other fire departments.
Mike was Treasurer of the Volunteer Fire Fighters Assn. for many years until they disbanded. During his time in the association, he was in charge of renting The Hall.
He was one of the original members of the Amoco Federal Credit Union Platinum Club, and he coached Little League baseball for many years.
Mike received many awards during his lifetime including:
1983 “Alicia Club”, given by Mayor Emmett F. Lowry.
1991 and 1993 Texas State Assoc. of Fire Fighters Paul Kelly Humanitarian Award.
1997 Fireman of the Year, Knights of Columbus.
1998 Fire Fighter of the Year, Texas City Fire Department.
1998 Favorite Fire Captain, given by the City of TC Dispatchers.
2006 Volunteer of the Year, TC/LM Chamber of Commerce.
2011 Golden Division Member of the Year, TC/LM Chamber of Commerce.
2014 Chairman’s Award TC/LM Chamber of Commerce.
2016 Jimmy Haley Community Service Award, TC/LM Chamber of Commerce.
2016 The Award of Commendation and Honorable Service Medal, given by the Texas City Fire Department and the I.A.F.F., Local 1259.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Michelle Mumey and two sisters, Ann Mumey and Jane Land.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Rose Mumey; two daughters, Chris Roberson (Ronnie) of Texas City, Jennifer Patterson (Toby) of Webster; and son, Rick Mumey (Jane) of Houston; two brothers, Patrick Mumey (Pam) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Brian Mumey (Clinton Swingle) of Rochester, New York; six grandchildren, Matt Christen, Staci Rives, Kate Mumey, Jack Mumey, Chassidy Rust, and Royce Roberson; seven great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at James Crowder Funeral Home, La Marque, with Rosary and Vigil Services at 6:00 pm.
A service will be held at 10:00 am Thursday December 31, 2020 at St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, of Texas City, with Father Clint Ressler officiating. Rosie and Family:
Fond memories of Mike and the Mumey family go back many years. As kids it was always loads of fun when we were together at the Fitzpatrick farm, at Grandma and Grandpa Mumey’s or in town at the Mumey home. He was a great guy, always concerned about the other guy. He is a first cousin in the true sense of the word.
Jay and Mary Ellen Fitzpatrick
My deepest condolences. Lifting prayers for comfort
.
I will truly miss Mike infectious smile along with his wit. Mike was always willing to learn and grow as a Firefighter. He was a true friend. We are on the road and will not be back in time for the service. We send our prayers to Rosie and the whole family on this sad day but knowing Mike is in the Lords hands makes it easier.
Mr. Mumey will be missed by so many. He was by far one of the greatest! It was an honor and blessing to have you in our lives.
I will miss your presence as we carry on what you so selfishly have done while with us .Rosie thank you for loaning Mike to us. I’m sure the LORD has a list for him to do and it will get done .Mike was like a brother I never had ,miss you .
The love of a husband and father is never ending, can never be replaced, taken away and never be lost since his warm and giving spirit will always live in your heart. I feel honored to have known such a wonderful person and the Mumey Family. Mike’s hopes and dreams will live in all of you and he will continue watching over you. The only thing that brought me comfort during this grieving time was sharing and cherishing all the great memories as a celebration of his life.
