Mary Elinor Embry-Katcher

Mary Elinor Embry-Katcher, of League City, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024, in Houston, Texas at the age of 72.

She was born on July 12, 1952 in Corpus Christi, Texas to John and Cecelia Embry.

Beyond family, the loves of her life, and most of her daily joyful time, were her horses and kitties. Jekarta, the mom horse; Echo, her 1,500 lb. baby and Mary’s favorite, who gave kisses with his giant muzzle to anyone with a treat in-hand; and Sirius (as in Harry Potter), who was adopted as a companion to Echo, and was equally spoiled.

At home, kitties got the same royal treatment. There were various names over the years, but Mitzi, recently passed, was the definition of a soul mate. Surviving now, often found curled up in Mary’s lap, are Floppy and Hoppy, who was rescued as a palm-sized kitty from the horse barn.

Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Katie, age 10, in 1993. Soulmates to be, if not already. Her father, John Embry and mother, Cecelia (Teleo) Embry, both passed many years ago.

Mary is survived by her husband and best friend, Steven A. Katcher, her dearly beloved son, Jeffrey C. Katcher and his wife Mariah. She is also survived by her beloved siblings, big sister Katherine DeMott and husband Joseph, little sister Margaret Embry, and little brother Sean Embry. Nieces and nephew include Eileen Curtright and husband Lance, Sarah Fuchs, and John DeMott.

Mary’s funeral service:

A Ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 10:30am at Crowder Funeral Home, 1645 East Main, League City, Texas 77573 with Deacon Andy DeYoung officiating.

Mary’s burial will be next to her daughter, Katie. Interment will follow the ceremony at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, 7801 Gulf Freeway, Dickinson, Texas 77539.

  1. Kim and I want to express our deepest sympathy to Steve, Jeffrey , and Mariah. We’ve known Mary for almost 50 years and have lived, loved and laughed with her. My first double date with Mary and Steve was horseback riding. I don’t get on a horse for just anybody, but somehow Mary convinced me to . Since Steve and I managed to stay on our horses, Mary and Kim decided we were worthy of them! Mary could always make us laugh, even through the toughest times. She was one in a million and it was an honor to have known and loved her. Dave and Kim Sweeney

  2. Mary was so strong and quick. She liked to say she was one step ahead of you. And she was, always one step ahead. She was witty. She was generous. She was loyal. Now she’s with Katie.

  4. Some people come into our lives and leave footprints on our hearts never to be forgotten. I had the privilege of knowing Mary through her deep love for her horses and cats and it was clear to me that her compassion for animals reflected the extraordinary care and warmth she extended to all.

Mary’s friendship was a gift I will forever treasure.
Her wisdom and unwavering kindness will be missed.

May she rest in peace and may her love continue to inspire us.
