Luke G. Schanzer, Sr.

Schanzer Luke Newspaper 7 13 2014Luke G. Schanzer Sr., 92, years old of Hitchcock, Texas passed away at home on Monday, July, 13, 2015. He was born January 14, 1923 in Hitchcock, Texas to Luke and Josephine Schanzer.

He was the former co-owner of Schanzer’s Super Market that helped settle Hitchcock. He served as a Marine in World War II as an airplane mechanic in the South Pacific, receiving 4 Campaign ribbons, 1 Bronze Combat Star for Midway and 4 Bronze Combat Stars for Action in the Soloman Islands. He is one of the last surviving charter members that started the Hitchcock VFW Post 5400. He was a charter member of Hitchcock Chamber of Commerce; he served on the Hitchcock Water Board and he was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Luke enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ernestine Schanzer and children: Chris Wooley and her husband, Gaddis; Jerry Schanzer and his wife, Sherri; Dr. Cathy Schanzer and her husband, Tom Lewis; Barbara Schanzer; Frank Schanzer; Tommy Schanzer and his wife, Kathy; John Schanzer and his wife, Pam and Glenn Schanzer and his wife, Terri. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 9:30am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Hitchcock, Texas. Funeral Service will be Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 10:30am at the church with Father Joseph Phiet The Nguyen officiating. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons Gaddis Wooley, Jr., Brian Wooley, Jason Schanzer, Eric Schanzer, Glenn Schanzer, II, Jacob Junco and Lucas Junco. Honorary pallbearer will be John Wooley.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Michelle Garza his loving caregiver.
