Kathleen (Longmire) Feindel
Kathleen (Longmire) Feindel was born on November 29, 1922, the last of Roy and Grace Longmire’s five children. She passed away peacefully on June 13, 2022, six months short of her 100th birthday. She grew up in Hillsburn, Nova Scotia, a small fishing village on the shore of the Bay of Fundy. Her father and two brothers all sailed from Hillsburn, dragging for fish and scallops and trapping lobsters to earn a living.
After graduating from high school, she pursued an associate degree in business administration and worked in Halifax until joining the Canadian Women’s Auxiliary Corps in July of 1942 to aid in the war effort. During the war effort she was stationed in London, England at the Canadian Army Office of Records where they processed death notices to the families of Canadians killed in World War II. She told of while returning from an evening of socializing, she and one of her colleagues were overflown by a German V-1 buzz bomb. When its engines cut out, the two of them hit the ground. While they were shaken by the blast, they were unhurt and returned safely home.
After being discharged from service after the war ended, she returned to Canada and went to work for Sun Life in Toronto. While there, she received an invitation to visit Dorothy (Feindel) Sanders, a former school mate whose family had emigrated to Dayton, Ohio, from Nova Scotia. She fell in love with Dorothy’s younger brother, Cash, and married him in 1949. The two of them had three sons—Richard in 1951, David in 1953 and Wayne in 1958. After the three boys were all in school, she resumed her business career and finished that up with ten years of working for E.F. McDonald.
After completing their working careers in Dayton, Cash and Kaye retired to Boynton Beach, Florida where they enjoyed gardening, square dancing, contract bridge and world travel. After spending twenty-eight years in Florida, they moved to Friendswood, TX in 2008 to be nearer to their youngest son’s family. Both Cash and Kaye remained proud of their Nova Scotia heritage throughout their lives, visiting family there often while their health permitted, and hosting Canadian family visitors throughout their lives.
Having passed away in 2015, Cash’s final resting place is at the Houston National Cemetery where Kaye will again be joining him. Memorial services will be held in both Houston, TX and Hillsburn, NS.
She is survived by her three sons, Richard (and wife Ruth of Frankfort, KY), David (and wife Lynn of Harpswell, ME), and Wayne (and wife Laurie of League City, TX), as well as four grandchildren (Caroline, Christina, Benjamin, and Jessica), and two great-grandchildren (Isabelle and Payton). She is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Cash W. Feindel, and four siblings (Annie Longmire, Lester, Lena, and James).
We had so many great visits while we wintered in Florida. The most memorable ones were our Thanksgiving visits…when Aunt Kaye and I would get up very early so we could get the best deals at Joann’s ! Sonny and Cash woul go at a more reasonable time to go to electronic stores! We would also celebrate her birthday during these visits….so many wonderful memories
