Joyce West
Joyce Downey West, passed away July 29, 2021 in League City, Texas at the age 82. She was born on May 17, 1939 in Bay Minette, Alabama to T.C. and Ollie Downey.
Joyce met her husband, James (Everett) at the A & W Root Beer stand in Bay Minette, Alabama. He would stop by to see her and she would hide behind the counter and tell her co-workers to tell him she wasn’t working. He was persistent and she finally agreed to go on a date with him. They married on August 2, 1957, moved to Texas in 1967 for his job with NASA, and were married for 60 years until his passing in 2017.
Joyce was a retired hairdresser who owned her own hair salon (shop), His and Hers Hairworks, for over 15 years. She opened the shop in 1978, after finding the location, taking out a loan, purchasing the equipment and taking a chance – she was a strong woman for her time. After her children were out on their own, she closed the shop and went on to work at several locations in the League City area. She made numerous friends and talked for many hours while “doing” hair.
Joyce was a loving mother, grandmother and best friend to many.
Joyce is survived by daughters, Vicki Irby and Sheri Howe and son James Everett West, Jr; grandchildren Traci Green, Michael Green, Cole Irby, Logan Howe and Gavin Howe.
She is preceded in death by her husband Everett, sister Mickey Christopher and brother J.C. Downey.
In lieu of flowers, Joyce requested that donations may be made to the American Heart Association, American Society of Nephrology, or MD Anderson.
My condolences to you and your family. I’m so sorry for the lost of your Mom. Praying for comfort and strength for all.
