  1. Dear Ekua and the entire Joseph Duncan Family,
Peace of the Lord be with you!
On behalf of the Dominican Fathers and brothers of the Province of Nigeria and Ghana, I write this message to you. At this point in time when your family mourns the passing on to glory of your beloved father, I encourage you to take heart and be strong in the Lord. Your father was a great man not necessarily because of the powers and the possessions he had while he was alive, but because HE LOVED GOD AND DIED IN HIM. This is the greatest achievement of any child of God and so we rejoice that he is in heaven. We continue to pray for you all as we ask the Lord whom he served so faithfully while on earth to bless and strengthen the family he has left behind. Amen. Fr Stephen Ogbe Op

  6. My memories of Uncle Tom are evergreen. A perfect gentleman. In all the years of a close family relationship, I can honestly say that I never heard uncle raise his voice. I admired his love for the piano and this was an early inspiration for me to learn to play the piano. So many sweet memories of the Duncan family home. When I was ill Mama and Dsddy would call me on Sundays to find out how I was doing, to encourage me and to pray for me. Thank you daddy for the love you gave to us

  11. Tribute to Uncle Tom

A few days ago, whilst catching up with my mother on how her night was, she said I had a dream about Uncle Tom and his family. “They all came to visit us, and your Daddy said they should stay. We have the guestrooms. But Uncle Tom said no, that they have a place to go to.” We had for some time, been worried about Uncle Tom and Aunty Ivy, knowing the difficulties cousin Sarah had been going through. Anyway, barely 1hr after that, I received a WhatsApp from cuz Tosan in Accra, sharing the very sad news that Uncle Tom had passed away. I don’t know what shocked me more, the dream or the news!

Words cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life.
Uncle Tom was a thoroughly honest, kind, gentle, somewhat shy, quietly funny and genuine man who always had time for people. We are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories spent in Railway compound, Lagos and later in Accra. He was very good Christian, a counselor and (like my grandfather, Pa Joseph Willie Kofi Duncan), Uncle Tom was a great Boy Scout Leader. I think his life can be somewhat summed up in the Scout Law:
A Scout honour is to be trusted.
A Scout is loyal to the president of Nigeria, his Scouters, his employers, and to those under him.
A Scout duty is to be useful and to help others.
A Scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout no matter to what country, gender, class or creed the other may belong.
A Scout is kind, gentle and polite.
A Scout is a friend to animals.
A Scout obeys orders of his parents, Patrol Leader or Scout Leader without question.
A Scout is cheerful under all difficulties.
    A Scout is thrifty.
A Scout is clean in thought, word and deed.

Fare thee well, Uncle Tom. Adieu, Adieu, Adieu
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole family, during these dark times.

Pax – Aunty Betty, Kofi, Julitta and families

  13. My beloved JTD Duncan,

A Mental Coach, Caring, Supportive, Hospitable, Confident, Philanthropist, and Large-Hearted, “Uncle Tom” as we call him.

Uncle Tom made me locate my late dad in Ghana Just before I went for Youth Service in Nigeria, he said Kwesi “You have to know and meet your dad” We drove to Accra in his car. He took me to the vehicle park to board a bus to Kumasi, and he said “Kwesi, when you meet your dad “don’t be angry with him, don’t fight him.

Uncle Tom a man with heart to reunite the family. He accommodated me in the railways boys quarters until I got married; my first home after marriage for over a year. He always did his best to connect with everyone far and near.

Uncle Tom, a caring and loving mentor.

May his very gentle soul rest in peace.

  14. A TRIBUTE TO LATE J.T.D. DUNCAN

” In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God”.
My sincere and deepest condolence to my age-long friend- Ivy and her children whom I knew when they were kids in Nigeria, for the sad loss of their loving Daddy.
Tom and my late husband – Mike met and became friends at a Dancing School in Ebute Metta in their youthful days. Co-incidentally, Ivy and I met at the Convent School , Ebute Metta, where we taught together and became friends too. Since then, we remained, Family Friends even when both families relocated to America.
I constantly kept in touch with them and later on , through Sarah, who has been a wonderful link.
Tom , had always been a gentleman and wel beloved by all. I sympathize with my friend, Ivy and the children for their loss of a loving husband and father. May God console you all and accept his soul. Amen.

  15. Dearest Uncle, closest friend to my late father, I am saddened that I have lost another dad. I will cherish our many phone conversations over the years especially when I moved to the US. Uncle you were a gem, a gentleman, kind, loving, family orientated, a prankster with so much wit.
Uncle Tom and my dad were classmates at the prestigious CMS Grammar School – 1951 set. There are many stories from their time there! But beyond CMS, they remained close friends throughout their lives. Oh what a wonderful reunion you must be having in heaven right now. My dad would always say “ah JTD!” Uncle would reply by saying “A Say Skipper” or “Sammy OLufemi” with emphasis.
May the Lord receive you with joy and may you find peace and rest. We will miss you so much. May God comfort aunty and my brother and sisters.

Uncle I love you tons but God loves you more.

  16. The passing away of Daddy was received with mixed feelings. Daddy was a very hard working man and a good sportsman. Upon arrival in Lagos from Banjul, The Gambia in the mid 80s to further my education in higher institutions in Nigeria, I stayed with the Duncans in Railway Compound, Ebute-Metta, Lagos who welcomed and treated me as one of their children. Daddy would always make sure all of us are well catered for including me. While I was in his house I never felt the loss of my biological father for a day as he treated me the same as he does to his children. He was soft spoken, always take things easy but firm in his own way. He was a very devoted christian who never misses church service and carried us along. He brought us all up in the fear of the Lord.
Daddy, you have gone but your memories will always remain. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

    • On behalf of the Newman clan as part of your very big family send our deepest sympathy to the Duncan family. You made us very proud for the beautiful family u raised. The question is when the enemy death strikes, your grief can be great even though you may hope in the future resurrection. Yet because you have confidence in that, your sorrow will not be unrelenting because Psalm 55:12 promises that He himself will sustain you. Uncle u are already missed n will be through the years to come. Our endearing gentleman uncle Tom your labors are over. May You Rest In Peace. With much love and sympathy.

  17. I have been very good friends with Ekua since our secondary school days in Queens College – Lagos and was always taken by how affable, kind and soft-spoken her father was. I got to spend more time and get to know him when I would visit the family in Chicago and later in Texas had some lively chats with Uncle.

Some years later, I would find that Uncle was very good friends and schoolmates with my husband’s father, Professor Akinboye Lesi.

We will miss him, but take solace in the life he lived and the legacy he left behind in his amazing family. Uncle has run his race and now he has gone home to rest.

  20. Dearest Cousins,
My heartfelt condolences to you all and Aunty Ivy at the passing of Uncle Tom.
Even though I hadn’t seen Uncle in so many years, I remember him well, a lovely gentleman, friendly, gentle, ready smile… and our visits to your home at Railway Compound were always lovely… he was a loving cousin to my dad, Prof J T. Kofi Duncan, and together with Aunty Ivy, a loyal friend to my late mum, Mrs Elaine Duncan.
I am so sad that our situations have been such that we could not all continue to grow old together as the Lagos Duncan Clan… that said, I was really happy to continue my friendship with Esi in Jos, and so glad that Uncle Tom got to enjoy a long and happy life surrounded by his children and grand children. I am also glad that today’s technology means I can let you all know how special both Uncle Tom and Aunty Ivy are, and how much they impacted our lives growing up.
May God bless and keep you all, and may He comfort you at this time. I pray that all goes well as you lay him to rest and that the fact that so many of us remember him with love is a comfort to you all.
Sleep well in the LORD Jesus, UncIe Tom, you have run your race well! And please say hi to my mum.

God bless you dearest Tom and Ivy for embracing me as you do with so many others. I felt this warm embrace from the time I first met you at Thomas and Jacquie’s wedding.

I will always remember and cherish our chats when I was living in New Jersey and you especially built me up when I was travelling my cancer journey.

You let me know unconditionally that as Jacquie and Thomas’ aunt I am automatically your sister. God bless you both eternally!

May the jubilation of reunification occurring in the spirit realm yield tremendous comfort in our hour of grief.

May the heartfelt memories of our places and times in the life of dearest brother Tom forever enrich our souls and the souls of our descendants.

In African ways of knowing we continue to exist so long as we are remembered.

For to have known dearest Tom is to have known love and compassion in motion; memorable experiences to cherish and relive through oration for upcoming generations untold.

A conscientious elder who ushered old time African values into current day affairs.

His knowledge sharing came boldly but with such a deep sense of humility.

  31. To the family of Late J.T Tom Duncan
My family and I have received with shock, the sad news of the passing on of J.T.D Tom Duncan. His demise is a grievous loss not only to his immediate family but to all of us who knew him and enjoyed his friendship for many years.
He was not only a boss and a colleague but a good friend.
Tom, as he was fondly called, was a fine gentleman to the core, a socialite and a beaurocrat of unblemished character. He served the Nigerian Railway Corporation with unparalleled diligence and competence over three decades.
He brought his trademark of excellence in service to any organisation he found himself. These included the Boys Scout Movement, not only in Nigeria but world wide, the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators Nigeria.
Tom served the Lord with all his might, intellect and treasure. He fought the good fight, he finished the race and has kept the faith, and there is laid for him a crown of righteousness.
His demise at ripe old age calls for celebration and not mourning. A good family man, Tom loved and cared for His wife, Ivy, children and grand children, without reservation. May the Lord comfort the bereaved family and grant them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
May his soul find rest in the bossom of the Lord. Goodnight Tom, my beloved boss and friend.

  52. Tribute from the Oteng-Yeboah family in Ghana

We came to know about the rare wisdom endowed to the late Tom Duncan when our son Kwadwo sought permission to take Adwoa to the altar as his wife. Mr. Duncan never knew our family in Ghana, and for him to be sure of the background of Kwadwo, sought the services of one of his old friends, Professor S.K.B. Asante. Prof knew me very well, having interacted with me on several occasions, first as having the same roots as old students of our secondary school, though at different times, and as a colleague Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, but never knew about my son in the US. It was later, when Kwadwo informed us to organize a marriage knocking ceremony on his behalf at the house of Mr. Duncan’s sister, Aunty Ivy Kuenyefu, at Teshie-Nungua, that we understood what had gone on and the roles played by Prof. Asante who only alerted me as the father of Kwadwo at one of our Academy’s programmes. That was when the family got to know what had happened behind the scenes.

For us as a family, we were very impressed with Mr. Duncan’s desire to find the family base where his daughter was going to marry into and raise her family. This singular act endeared our family towards our son’s marriage to Adwoa and consequently arranged that Kwadwo’s father, mother and younger sister with her small daughter, should travel to Houston, Texas to perform the engagement ceremony and follow it up with the wedding at Galveston, Texas. By God’s grace, Kwadwo and his wife Adwoa have produced two little children Kwadwo Apau and Nana Esi Oforiwaa.

We are pained to see Mr. Duncan leave this earth so soon after the union of his daughter to our son and the arrival of his little grandchildren. We saw in Mr. Duncan a man of principles, who would not settle at anything until he has satisfied himself that the marriage destination of his daughter was good and secure.

We mourn with the Duncan family on the loss of the head of the family. Our hearts go out to our in-laws, especially Adwoa, and pray that the Lord will console them.

We wish Papa Tom a safe passage to the great beyond and pray for the repose of his gentle soul in the bosom of his maker.

  58. Uncle Tom, as you join our forebearers in the mighty bosom of our Lord, we pray that she wraps her comforting arms around you and keep you until we meet again.
Thomas Campell wrote: To live in hearts we leave behind Is not to die. Your body might be gone from this world, but your spirit will live on in our hearts forever.
My earliest memory of you was in Cape Coast. I must have been around eight or nine. My grandmother, Anutie Comfort, would send me to deliver a message to your family house in Tantre.
I remember my mother was excited whenever you came home, but my most vivid memory is that of your Volvo Car. It was the coolest car ever and it inspired us, and can you imagine, my first car was a Volvo and I still have one.
Auntie Adedzewoa, my lovely Auntie, your husband touched so many lives by his selfless and countless acts of kindness, always giving and never expecting any favours in return.
Many are those who have stayed and passed through your house in Nigeria, and many are those who bear witness to his kindness. When I asked my sister to describe Uncle Tom in one single word, she said, without a doubt, Gentleman.
He was a Gentleman. The last time we met was about four years ago in your house in Texas. It was a brief, all too brief visit, and you were not well, but I remember that gentle smile. As we pay tribute to Uncle Tom, the best we can do is to emulate his exemplary character of Kindness.
My dearest cousins, Maame Esi, Ewura Sally, Ekua, Adwoa and Kobina, thank you for sharing your lovely dad with us. He was so many things to so many of us. The Lord giveth and the Lord takes, in certain assurance that we will meet again.
Your beautiful family is a testimony of his achievement here on earth. On behalf of the entire extended family at home and abroad, we say, thank you for sharing him with us, and may the Lord give you strength and comfort you all. We thank the lord for a life lived in Christ.

  60. Psalm 116:15
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

We are thankful for the life of Uncle Tom’s. He was such a gentle soul. Growing up as children at the “Railways” uncle always came across so gentle, kind hearted and beautiful man. We all felt so comfortable around him. Our Dad (Late Dr. Bewaji) and Uncle Tom were really really very close friends and we always admired their friendship – it was full of joy, love, laughter; and it was timeless – even after not seeing each other for years after leaving Nigeria for separate destinations (the UK and the USA), they just seem to pick up from whence they left.

Aunty be encouraged – uncle is with the host of heaven finally enjoying true life that we see very dimly on this side. Thank God for his life, for his legacy and for he beauty he passed on to his children. We love you all and God truly bless, comfort and sustain the whole family In Jesus Name!

Uncle Tom and Auntie Ivy have stayed close to our family through the years, and have been a source of support in so many ways. Uncle Tom was a gentleman to the core, and you would never hear him raise his voice at anyone. My mum (Auntie Doris), sisters, the entire extended family (on father and mothers’ side) and I will definitely miss Uncle Tom!

  66. It is with sadness, gratitude and immense love that I write this tribute to Joseph T. D. Duncan, aka Kweku, but known by many, including me, affectionately as daddy.

Although you were sick for the last few years, I can’t believe you’re gone. I will miss your zeal for life; watching you attentively connect with family and friends; the sound of your voice when you were joyfully singing; your laughter; our conversations about spirituality, faith and God. But the grief I feel isn’t just for me. It’s for your wife, your children, your sister, your sisters-in-law, your grandchildren, your nieces and nephews, and all of your family members. It’s for your relatives and loved ones who weren’t able to travel within the States or from abroad to see you before you passed away or celebrate your life. It’s for your descendants who had too little time with you. It’s for the numerous people across the globe who are mourning this loss. It is not an overstatement to say that your death is a loss for the world as it seems that everyone who knew you was enriched by their time with you.

Despite the painfulness of this time, I am grateful.

Thank you for being a kind, wise, humorous, spiritual, loving, genuine man of dignity and strength.

Thank you for being a role model to Kobina, the man who became my spouse/life partner and, along with your wife, raising him and his sisters to be wonderful human beings.

Thank you for embracing me as your daughter – not just your ‘daughter-in-law’ – and immediately accepting and loving me unconditionally. Thank you for loving my biological family as your own.

Thank you for all the blessings you bestowed on your son and me: the words of guidance and inspiration you delivered at our wedding, the naming ceremonies you led for our daughters, the wisdom you imparted to all 4 of us over the years, the prayers you said on our behalf.

Thank you for your legacy of values such as honesty, integrity, hard work, compassion, industriousness, respectfulness, appreciation of art and culture, community service, peacefulness and collaboration.

Thank you for being fully, comfortably and unapologetically you.

Daddy, I will do my best to carry on your legacy through my own life and though the teachings Kobina and I impart to our children. May you rest in perfect peace and power. I love you.

  69. As I think of your dad from Railway compound, the things I remember are that he was a very gentle soul, I believe he was involved with Boys Scout and he played the piano. I hope my recollection is accurate.

May God comfort and strengthen you all through this time and may you find some comfort in knowing that he lived a full life. Mrs Duncan, Kobina, Essi, Erasali, Ekua and Ajua, accept our condolences; our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

    Justin Iloenyosi
    • Amen! Thank you so much Dear Justin for your kind note.

Your recollection is accurate. Daddy was greatly involved with the Boy Scouts, both in Nigeria, and here in the U.S., he learned to play the piano as an adult, and indeed, was a gentle soul.

      God bless.

  70. Uncle was a very gentle, easy going person. I remember when my Dad and Uncle will go to the Railway institute to play lawn tennis, we always went with my Dad, because of the Suya and coke we were sure to have after. I was always the ball boy while they played tennis, Uncle used to say I was very fast running after the ball..
All the times in Railway Compound when we rode our bikes to hang out with the kids at his house, he always insisted we come in and take a drink.

These are memories we will not forget.

    Rest in Peace Uncle.

Aunty, Kobina, Mamesi, Sarah, Ekua and Ajua, please accept our condolences.

  74. It was sumptuous dinner reception at the home of the Grant – Acquah’s, during Mr Duncan’s first visit to the city of Chicago in the early nineties in which I had the singular privilege of saying the grace to be followed by a round of compliments from the guests.

In his signature soft-voice “that was a pope – ish prayer” he added. The uniqueness and timing of the comments aroused my curiosity to learn more about him. Thus beginning the long-lasting relationship between an outstanding professor and a proud student.

Uncle Tom, as I fondly called was a literary gentleman par excellence. His interests, intellectual or recreational were wide and varied. An unassuming man by nature and a true disciple by faith, he recognized his god-given talents and went about life sharing the fruits of his labor with neighbors, friend or foe, all to greater honor and glory of God.

A rich legacy. Rest in Power.

    Uncle Clement & Family.

  75. Myself and Joe first met at Harper Square Co-op Building, 4800 S. Lake Park, Chicago about 1999. We both recognised each other and exchanged pleasantries and contacts. We struck an instant acquaintance and friendship which has since blossomed into brotherliness. He became an avuncular figure to me. Frankly, it is not easy writing a ‘tribute’ for a friend like Joe that knows everything.

Joe held nothing back from me in our friendship. If I do not want to hear the naked truth, I don’t come near Joe. Through the decades of our friendship, I observed and marveled at the depth of Joe’s mind, the vastness of his experiences, intellect, integrity and unwavering frankness (almost to a fault). To pry a little deeper is to discover a treasure trove of a man with exquisite taste of class and style, not ostentatious, not flamboyant and definitely not extravagant but dignified and respectable.

After years of an unblemished brotherhood, I can only liken Joe’s life as a lesson in simplicity, kindness, humbleness, large heartedness and total unshaken faith in God. Joe’s determination to achieve everything he set his mind to was clearly demonstrated when he completed his Pastoral Programme despite going through serious pain of losing his eyesight.

Dear Joe, thank you for teaching me how to use the Book of Psalms to enhance my spiritual knowledge. It was humbling to have been able to make the last call to you at the last few hours.
These attributes have endeared Joe Tom Duncan to me and all who have come in contact with my dear Joe.

May the gentle soul Rest In Peace
