Josefa Isabel Garcia-Firpi, PHD
Josefa Isabel(Pepita) Garcia Firpi, PhD, of League City, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2015 in Nassau Bay, Texas at the age of 82. She was born on October 26, 1933 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico to Gregorio Garcia and Anatolia Firpi. She obtained her Doctorate in Mathematics at Louisiana State University. She taught Mathematics at the University of Puerto Rico, retiring as Chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico, Arecibo Campus. She traveled around the World making friends with her outgoing personality and generosity of spirit. She was preceded in death by her sister Margarita Garcia and brother Cristobal Garcia. She is survived by her daughter Diana Vega and husband Julio, son William Firpi and wife Marie, sisters Minerva Garcia and Sara Garcia, brothers Carlos Garcia and Orlando Garcia, grandchildren Cristina Vega, Daniel Vega and wife Molly, Jonathan Vega, Alyson Firpi and Michelle Firpi, great-grandchildren Mason Vega and Layla Vega and many other loving family and friends. A service will be held on Sunday, December 20 at 1:30 PM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1612 East Walker, League City, Texas 77573.
La Facultad de la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Arecibo lamenta profundamente el deceso de nuestra querida Josefa García Firpi. La doctora García Firpi fungió como profesora adscrita al Departamento de Matemáticas, fue directora de Departamento, Directora y Decana de la Institución y nuestra primera Rectora.
Acompañamos en su dolor a sus familiares y amigos y nos unimos, como su familia extendida, a la pena por la partida de nuestra querida Pepita.
