Johnnie Jerome Cernosek
Johnnie Jerome Cernosek, age 82, passed away unexpectedly on January 30 at his home in Dickinson. He was born September 9, 1942, in Galveston, TX at St. Mary’s Infirmary to Mary Kossa Cernosek and Anton B. Cernosek. Raised in Galveston, Johnnie attended St. Mary’s Cathedral elementary school and graduated from Kirwin High in 1960. Johnnie was always industrious, starting a paper route while in elementary school, delivering products from a local pharmacy on his bicycle as a young teenager, and sometimes rising at 5AM on high school days to assist a Uneeda Laundry delivery truck for a few hours before school. He spent most of his career and retired from ISP Technologies in Texas City as a Chemical Process Operator. Johnnie loved anything to do with cars. From constructing models, building engines and restoring hot rods, to watching car races and going to car shows. He began building model cars, mostly hot rods and dragsters, as a teenager and became quite an expert. With his meticulous designs, he won several awards at local contests and developed such a reputation that others would bring their kits to have Johnnie customize for them. His first real car was a 1962 Pontiac that he extensively modified and occasionally would race it at the old Houston drag strip.
Johnnie was a member of the Czech Catholic Union of Texas (The K.J.T.). He especially enjoyed visiting with his “country cousins” in and around the Ammansville, Tx area. He was always in search of good kolaches but never found any to match the ones made by his mother. He enjoyed being with family and friends, whether for the holidays, celebrating birthdays, or just going out to dinner.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son Brian (Lisa), sister Sr. Barbara Ann O.P., brother Tony (Marilyn), sister Mary Jane, nephews Aaron Cernosek (Clarissa), Nate Cernosek (Jessica) and David Cernosek (Courtney), several grand nephews and numerous cousins.
Pallbearers will be Jesse Barrera, Aaron Cernosek, Nate Cernosek, David Cernosek, Luca Cernosek and Petronilo Cernosek.
Services will be held at Crowder Funeral Home, 851 FM 517 W, Dickinson on February 20 with visitation beginning at 10am and services at 11am. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson.
