James Truitt Duncan

James Truitt Duncan, 61, of Santa Fe, Texas, passed away on March 17, 2021 in League City, Texas.  Truitt was born February 5, 1960 in the Dow Hospital in Freeport, Texas to Wayne Truitt Duncan and Gloria Mae Taylor Duncan. He was the third of their three children.

Raised in Lake Jackson, Truitt attended Oral Roberts Elementary and Lake Jackson Intermediate and graduated in 1978 from Brazoswood High School. Truitt was active in several extracurricular activities but had a great love of playing the coronet in the band and playing power forward on the basketball team.

Truitt followed high school by attending Brazosport College from 1978 to 1980.  He put himself through college while working on a survey crew that laid the pathways for the future of Brazosport, including the many highways and subdivisions around the area. His job helped him supplement his love of being outdoors while completing his education.

After a few years living in his beloved hill country, Truitt returned to his roots and was hired by Dow Chemical where he worked in Operations for the following 34 years, the last several years being with Olin Corp. He was a 34-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 564.

Truitt was an avid outdoorsman and greatly loved hunting and fishing. Whether on the Duncan homestead in Liberty Hill, Texas or the deer lease he and his wife Lorie shared in San Marcos, he was never more at home. A patient soul, he often had more satisfaction teaching the skills of hunting to his son, nieces or nephews, children of his good friends, and anyone else who was willing to share a deer blind and listen to his whispers of advice.

One would also find Truitt along the shallow reefs of the local bays or in the stock pond of a friend’s place fishing for the elusive trout, redfish, bass or bluegill. Upon a “hookup” his trademark laugh was the signal that he had just “schooled you”.  He would often admire his catch, take an occasional picture and release his catch back to the water to later be caught again.

He is preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Gloria Duncan and niece Kylie Mae Thomas.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lorie Duncan; son, Justin Duncan; stepson Matthew Carmichael and fiancée Annie Randall; sister Sherry Thomas and husband Geoff; brother Robert Duncan and wife Debra; sister-in-law Tracey Lebo and husband George; brothers-in-law Greg Myers and wife Patty; and Doug Myers and wife Sonya; father-in-law Charles Myers and wife Pauline; his nieces Megan Frank and husband Rick, and Taylor Duncan; nephews Phil Thomas and wife Jennifer; Michael Hopkins and wife Jackie; his seven great nieces Natalie, Gabby, Henley, Kylie Faith, Charlotte, Olivia, and Lucy; and three great nephews Ian, Johnathan, and Zach; his lifelong best friend James Cesarini and wife Ginger; and many cousins and friends, and loyal dog, Hunter.

Pall bearers for his funeral will be Justin Duncan, Robert Duncan, Geoff Thomas, Matthew Carmichael, James Cesarini, and Robert Slagle.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 23, 2021 between 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Crowder Funeral Home, 851 FM 517 Road West, Dickinson, TX 77539. The family requests that visitors respect their wishes and wear masks inside the funeral home and practice social distancing.

A private family graveside service will be held Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at the family cemetery in Liberty Hill, Texas.

  8. I met and knew Truitt through my association/friendship with James Cesarini. I know that he and James were the best of friends and I heard them both speak so fondly of each other. I had the good fortune to spend some outdoor time with Truitt and you could tell he truly loved being outdoors hunting, fishing and just spending time with friends. He was a great man and he will be missed by many.

May God bless you and keep watch over you as you mourn his passing and celebrate his life.

  10. My condolences to Lorie and family. I never had the pleasure of meeting Truitt but felt I knew about him as Lorie posted many Facebook pictures of the two of them and it was easy to see their love of family, each other, and the outdoors. It’s easy to see he will be missed by many. My condolences and prayers for comfort and peace!
