James M. (Jimmie) Tomme
James M. (Jimmie) Tomme passed away peacefully September 30, 2017. He was born in Galveston, Tx. June 24, 1932 to the late Olga (Solari) Tomme and James M. Tomme Jr.
He was a proud BOI, but during the depression years his family relocated with GC & SF Railway facilities in Brenham. They returned to Galveston in 1945 to live. He graduated from Ball High school in June 1950 and went to serve his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy. He was a sonarman aboard the USS George K. MacKinzie DD836 with two deployments to Korean waters where he received the Korean Service Ribbon, The United Nations Service Medal and the China Service Medal. Released from active duty in August 1953, he joined the GC & SF Railway in the Accounting Department. Promoted to the parent company AT & SF Railway in August 1963, he held numerous management positions retiring in September 1991 as Assistant Director to Revenue Customer and Car Accounting.
Jimmie returned to Galveston in January 1997 to care for his mother, where he met Shirley (Giusti) in 1997 and they were married in June 1998.
Survivors include his wife of 19 years Shirley (Giusti) Tomme, daughter Peggy Tomme and lifelong partner Jane Roller, Step children Lynn and Rick Garza, Joan and Chuck Moss, Craig Giusti, Lisa and Steve Eddy, 11 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and cousins Dow, Andy, Jack and Susan Solari.
He became a Catholic through the RCIA program in April 1999 at St. Mary’s of the Expectation Catholic Church in League City. Active in many Ministries he became an Instituted Acolyte.
Jimmie was an avid golfer and served on the Board of Directors for five years as chairman, at South Shore Harbor Country Club. He Later joined the “Bandits” a golfing Club that played twice a week, he also served on the Board for that group.
The Family will receive friends on Thursday October 5, 2017 from 6-8:00pm with a Vigil and Rosary Service at 7 o’clock at St. Mary’s of the Expectation Catholic Church, 1612 East Walker, League City, Texas 77573 with Deacon Andy DeYoung officiating. A Funeral Mass will follow on Friday at St. Mary’s of the Expectation Catholic Church at 10:30am with Father Howard Drabek officiating. A grave side ceremony will follow on Friday at Wilson Valley Cemetery in Academy, Texas.
Serving as Pallbearers are Jack, Dow and Andy Solari, Earl Callas, Ed Dvorak, Jim Gaffney. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Bryan, Jim Smecca, John Taylor and Bobby Whelton.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s of the Expectation Catholic Church in League City or the charity of your choice.
Rest in Peace Jimmie. Sure will miss this good friend of 65 years.Thanks for the memories. Bobby
