James Kenneth Atkins
James Kenneth Atkins, 82, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2024, at his home in Friendswood, Texas.
James, known to most as Kenneth or Ken, was born on October 23, 1942, in Goose Creek, Texas, to James and Jewell Atkins.
A proud graduate of Texas A&M University, James earned a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1965 while balancing his studies with his service in the Corps of Cadets and his early married life with his wife, Judith Hyzer. James’s love for both Texas A&M and his wife remained strong throughout his life, and he cherished watching Aggie football, even in his final days. His passion for history extended beyond the football field, with a particular focus on World War II and the Civil War. He was an avid competitive chess player and enjoyed grand strategy board games, often playing long-distance games with others across the U.S. He even had a special closet built in his home to store the many games he was involved in.
Before retiring, James and his family took many memorable trips, including camping across the U.S. in their trailer, and later traveling in an RV to cool-weather destinations. He enjoyed fishing, visiting historical sites, and wildlife viewing during these travels. He and his wife, Judy, also enjoyed international travel, taking five month-long cruises around Europe, Asia, New Zealand, South America, and the Caribbean. They toured Australia and other parts of the world with their close friends, Judy and Tommy Carswell.
At home, James was a devoted family man. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, watching sports, and supporting their various activities. He had a special bond with his grandchildren—admiring Alex’s sharp memory and knowledge of college football, Texas highways, and chess; cheering on Landon in his football and basketball games; and watching Ella play softball. He took great pride in his family’s accomplishments and was always involved in their lives.
James was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Judy, and his brother, Pat.
He is survived by his children, Kathy Latham, Bob Atkins and wife Wendy, and his grandchildren, Alex Latham, Landon Atkins, and Ella Atkins and sister Betsy Miller.
A celebration of James’s life will be held at Bob’s home at 2204 Apache Crossing, League City, TX, on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from noon to 3 p.m. All are welcome to stop by to share memories and reminisce about the good times.
