Frances Williams Phillips
Frances Williams Phillips passed away on May 21, 2019, at the Proverbial Care nursing facility in Pearland, TX. She and her late husband, Vernon L. Phillips, were married in 1941 and became residents of Griffin, GA in 1949. She moved to a retirement home in League City, TX in 2013 and was transferred to another facility in Pearland, TX, a few weeks ago. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Williams of Griffin.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Cary Wright, of Hoschton, GA; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sherry King Phillips, of League City, TX; and her sister, Ms. Bettie Z. Williams, of League City, TX. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Tracy Wright of Grayson, GA; Robert Phillips, Jr. of League City, TX; and Meredith Phillips Thompson, of Dickinson, TX. Mrs. Phillips also is survived by seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Phillips was predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Sibyl W. Glover, of Jackson, MS, and her grandson, Cameron Wright.
Mrs. Phillips was born in 1921 in McDuffie County, GA. Her grade school years were in Millen, Savannah, and Glennville. It was in Glennville that she met her future husband, Vernon Phillips. She attended what was then the South Georgia Teacher’s College, now Georgia Southern University, and Draughn’s School of Commerce in Atlanta.
Mrs. Phillips served as the secretary/administrative assistant for the First United Methodist Church, Griffin, GA, for over 48 years, retiring Dec. 31, 2001. On January 10, 2002, the church held a day of celebration for her years of faithful service. During that service, several ministers for whom she had worked and laypersons from the church spoke of her positive influence on the lives of numerous people, her deep devotion to Christ, her love for people, her commitment to the highest ideals of her faith, and her commanding presence as she fulfilled her duties for her Lord and her church. In recognition of her 48 years of service, the chapel of the First United Methodist Church was formally named “The Frances W. Phillips Chapel.”
Funeral services for Frances W. Phillips will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2019 11:00am at Frances W. Phillips Chapel, Griffin First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church.
