Frances Mangiafico

Frances Anne Mangiafico passed away after a short illness on June 19, 2020 at the age of 85. Born Frances Anne Echols on 26 November 1934 in Cherokee County Texas, Frances was the oldest of five children born to Henry Marvin Echols and Nola Bee Horton. She grew up in Rusk, Texas and always had her nose in a book, which is how she earned her nickname “Charcoal Annie” by paying more attention to her books than the meals she was cooking.

Frances attended the University of Texas at Austin before marrying Marion W. Schellhase in 1954. In 1966 she moved to Friendswood TX to raise her three boys. She was a member of the Friendswood United Methodist Church where she taught adult Sunday school. Frances was also a volunteer librarian for the Friendswood Independent School District (FISD), where she enjoyed reading to the little kids, as well as a Cub Scout Den Leader. After her sons graduated from FHS, Frances then decided to help people attain their weight loss goals by becoming a Weight Watchers leader. In 1987, she married Joseph J. Mangiafico and obtained her commercial driver’s license to accompany her husband on the road.

In 2000, Frances moved to League City, Texas where she was a member of the Bay Harbour United Methodist Church. She loved spending time with her family, adored her grandchildren and great grandchild, and enjoyed caring for her animals. Frances was known for being awake at the crack of dawn – ready to be the first person to call and wish someone a happy birthday and retell their birthday story.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph James Mangiafico, and her son, Stephen Marion Schellhase. She is survived by two sons, James Marvin Schellhase (Susan) and John Charles Schellhase (Amy); five grandchildren, Melissa Schellhase, Lindsay Hoffman (Chris), Robert Schellhase, Sydney Schellhase, Thomas Schellhase; and one great grandchild, Ethan Hoffman. She is also survived by two sisters, Patricia Haddock and Mina Harris (Andy), two brothers, Odis and Charles Echols, and several nieces and nephews.

Her family respected and adored her. Frances was loved by so many and she will be missed.

A celebration of life is being planned once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
