Dr. Ganesh L. Ghurye

Dr. Ganesh L. Ghurye, 58, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, on October 15, 2024 after a 3 year battle with Stage IV cancer.

Dr. Ghurye was born on September 5, 1966, to Laxmikant and Saraswati Ghurye in Vengurla, India. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Dr. Shilpa Ghurye, his two daughters: Shalini and Manali, and his canine companions; Wolfie, Deedee, and Idli.

Dr. Ghurye earned a doctorate in Environmental Engineering from the University of Houston’s Cullen College of Engineering in 2003. After completing research projects in California, New Mexico, and Texas, he made Pearland, TX his home in the early 2000s. He worked as an environmental engineer at CDM for several years before joining ExxonMobil, at which he worked for over 15 years. Dr. Ghurye’s contribution to research was remarkable, with his most cited research involving methods of removing arsenic from water. He is remembered by his colleagues and graduate school friends as an exceptional mentor and a dedicated student.

Dr. Ghurye considered his crowning achievement to be his daughters. As a fierce advocate for women’s education, he worked hard to provide them with everything they needed to pursue higher education. His oldest daughter, Shalini, is currently finishing her fourth and final year at the Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Medicine, with plans to pursue a residency in Family Medicine. His youngest daughter, Manali, is pursuing a degree in engineering at the University of Houston with plans to pursue a doctoral degree in engineering. He very proudly shared this with his therapists, nurses, doctors, and friends. In addition to providing for his own daughters, Dr. Ghurye also created scholarships for young girls and boys from impoverished communities in India who wanted to pursue education.

Dr. Ghurye will be remembered for his generous heart, his quick wit, his boundless creativity, and his dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. He will be missed dearly.

A small memorial with friends and family will be held on Thursday, October 17th, 2024 at 3 PM at Crowder Funeral Home in Pearland, TX. A celebration of his life will be held in the coming month or so, to be announced at a later date.

  3. Prasad will be always remembered for being humble and kind brother to me. He was a very happy go lucky and super intelligent person as I knew him since childhood. I always looked up to him as a father Figure. He was so proud of his daughters and would always speak about them whenever we met. Though being a strict and disciplined father he would always tease me that I was spared from his hands. Many golden moments spent with my family will always be cherished. Rest in peace Prasad. Love u ❤️

My heart felt condolences to Shilpa who is pillar of this family and to Shalini and Manali. Take care gals.

  9. My deepest condolences to the family of Ganesh. We worked together at ExxonMobil and shared a passion for STEM education, courageous leadership, and being a voice for the underserved and underrepresented. We would call each other “Doc” because we both appreciated and valued our PhD journey in environmental subject areas. He was such a great guy and will truly be missed. Rest well my friend.

  13. Dearest Shilpa, Shalini, Manali,

I write this with teary eyes and a heavy heart. But also with a deep sense of gratitude. When I began my MS at UofH so many decades ago, Ganesh was one of the first to take me under his wings. His warmth, loud laugh, jokes that would make 5 year old and a 50 year old laugh at the same time, completely disarmed me. When the pangs of homesickness would hit, he made me feel part of your family.

His love for U2, how he supported and cared for my better half, when I had to make an urgent India trip, our weekends at your home… Ganesh (and by extension you all) where the few constants for me. Around whom I could anchor my stay in Houston.

I pray for dear Ganesh’s soul, may he find the peace that passeth understanding. I pray for all of you, that you find the inner strength, support, and loving care to in this time of loss. And a warm warm hug to you all.

As always, with all of you in my mind in heart,

    Sushrut.

  22. Deeply shocked to hear this. Never had a chance to be in touch for last several years but was virtually a shadow friend at ICT Mumbai where we studied together from 1988 to 1991. Sharp looks and intellect is where GG stood amongst the crowd. Rest in peace Bro. Pray that his family come to peace with themselves soonest and carry forward the legacy he created for himself as a kind hearted human being.

  26. Dear Shalini and Manali: I am profoundly saddened by the loss of Ganesh. He was the first person I met upon my arrival in the United States, graciously picking me up from the airport. From that very moment, he made me feel like a part of his family. Thanks to him and Shilpa, I never experienced homesickness. I hold dear the numerous memories of our times together on Friday evenings and weekends, as well as our years as neighboring lab mates at UH.

Ganesh was exceptionally talented and served as my mentor in inorganic chemistry and water treatment. He was a renowned expert on arsenic removal from groundwater. He consistently supported me throughout my professional career, offering guidance and taking a genuine interest in my growth. More than a friend, he was like a brother to me and played a significant role in my journey in the USA over the past 25 years.

Ganesh often spoke warmly of both of you. You brought him immense joy, and he was exceedingly proud of your accomplishments. Please continue to excel in all your endeavors.

Dear Shilpa: Words fall short in expressing the depth of my sorrow. His passing has left a profound void in my life. I pray that you and the children find the strength to overcome this great loss. Ganesh’s memory will forever be cherished in my heart….

    With deepest sympathy,
    Ramesh
