Dorothy Mae Chapman

Dorothy Mae Chapman

November 29, 1941 – January 29, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dorothy Mae Chapman on January 29, 2025. She departed this life surrounded by loved ones and family. Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose warmth and kindness touched all who knew her.

Dorothy was born on November 29, 1941, in Tunica, Mississippi. She was the last surviving sibling in her family, having been preceded in death by her mother, father, and siblings. Though she has left this world, her legacy of love and devotion will continue through her cherished family.

Dorothy met the love of her life, Hubert Chapman, after they both moved to Houston, Texas, for work. Originally from Jennings, Louisiana, Hubert quickly fell in love with Dorothy, and they built a beautiful life together. They were married on December 14, 1963, and shared 61 wonderful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for one another.

Dorothy was a loving mother to her four children: Kevin Chapman and his wife, Ann VonDerAu Chapman; Trina Chapman; Kerwin Chapman; and Tricia Cheney and her husband, Chris Cheney. She was also a proud and devoted grandmother to Gabrielle, Kain, Izaria, Elizabeth, Charles, and Lillian. She also welcomed Charles’ wife, Josephina and Gabby’s husband Chase as her grandchildren by extension. Each of them brought her immense joy, and she cherished every moment spent with her growing family, including many nieces, nephews, and friends she considered family.

Dorothy had a deep love for holiday gatherings, often firing up the barbecue to bring family together for special occasions. Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite times of the year, filled with warmth, laughter, and the joy of togetherness. She especially loved sitting on her stool in the kitchen, watching over her family as conversations flowed and memories were made. These moments, where love and connection thrived, were among her greatest joys.

Dorothy had a deep love for animals and formed a special bond with her beloved dogs, Foxy, Cali, and Kara. Nature brought Dorothy great peace, and she found immense joy in watching the hummingbirds, cardinals, and deer that frequently visited her yard. Their graceful presence and quiet beauty provided her with endless comfort and happiness.

Dorothy’s kindness, patience, and love for both family and animals defined her life. Her legacy will live on through the many lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a local animal shelter in Dorothy’s honor, as a tribute to her love for animals. Her favorite shelter was the SPCA of Polk County.

She will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who loved her.
