Burt Norman Heddles

Burt Norman Heddles, 55, of League City, died peacefully at his home on Monday, February 21, 2022.  He was born August 14, 1966 in Galveston, Texas to Helen and Ray Heddles.

In 1984, Burt met the love of his life, Sharon. They dated on and off for many years. In 2003, Burt proposed over the phone from Iraq and Sharon said yes. They were married on February 23, 2004, in The Bahamas. In June 2009, the joy of his life, Hunter, was born in Lihue, Hawaii.

Burt graduated from Clear Creek High School in 1984.  He served in the United States Army as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1986–1989 and then 2000–2007.  He saw combat in the Global War on Terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan.  He was active in the 82nd Airborne Division Association and the 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment Association. He earned his Expert Field Medical Badge, awarded the Combat Medical Badge, and earned his Expert Infantryman Badge.  He also achieved his Master Parachutist Wings (Jump Master) with the 1st Brigade of 82nd Airborne Division.

Burt also had a long career in the Fire Service.  He served as a firefighter with the Bacliff Volunteer Fire Department, La Marque Fire Department, and Southeast Volunteer Fire Department.  He also worked in EMS with Paramedic Plus EMS in Galveston County.  He worked with La Porte Fire Marshal’s Office and Dickinson Fire Marshal’s Office, where he became the Fire Marshal in 2018.

Burt was a protector through life, on the battle field, on the fire ground and in his battle with cancer.  He adopted the mantra of “Never Quit” and lived the mantra until the very end.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Heddles of League City; son, Hunter Heddles, of League City; brother, Eric; sister-in-law’s Jackie Heddles and Paula Williams; nieces, Shelby and Abigail; numerous other family members and friends in the Fire Service and Army Airborne community.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Helen Garcia Heddles; his father Ray Frederick Heddles; grandmother, Teresa Garcia; aunt Carolina Garcia; cousins Carolyn Eposito and Larry O’Neil.

There will be a visitation held on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Crowder Funeral Home – Dickinson, 851 FM 517 Road West, Dickinson, TX 77539 from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm.  A funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022, 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1612 E Walker St, League City, TX 77573, with his interment to follow at Forest Park East Cemetery, Webster, TX.

  8. It pains me to learn of Burt Heddles’ passing, a good friend, an Army Paratrooper, Combat Medic, and Firefighter. 🇺🇸

I was Burt’s Basic Training Drill Sergeant at Fort Jackson, SC and was fortunate to be with him and his Battle Buddies, when we decided to meet recently in San Antonio, TX for a basic training platoon reunion, which is a rare, almost unheard of occurrence.

All of Burt’s basic training platoon was part of a cohort of “soon to be” Airborne Combat Medics, and they eventually went on to Airborne jump school at Fort Benning, Georgia, and then on to Airborne assignments at Fort Bragg and elsewhere.

Prior to our Texas reunion, I was pleased to visit many of his basic training platoon buddies later on, in the 82nd Airborne Division, where I served two separate tours, to attend their Expert Field Medical Badge (EFMB) graduation.

Words can not express my admiration for Burt’s professionalism, calm demeanor, care for his wife Sharon and son Hunter, and his dedication to serve in public service, both as an Army Combat Medic Paratrooper, as well as a dedicated firefighter for many years.

Brother Burt, you will be missed, but we will see you again when we join you in Airborne Heaven. AATW! Chuck Pringle
