Bettie Zane Williams
Bettie Zane Williams passed away on January 5, 2022, in Friendswood, Texas. Bettie was born on September 9, 1928 near Millen, Jenkins Co., GA, the daughter of the Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Williams. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Patricia Phillips Wright of Hoschton, GA and three nephews, Robert V. Phillips, Sr., of League City, TX, William Glover of Flowood, MS, and Dr. Jeffrey Glover of Brandon, MS. She is also survived by one great-niece and several great-nephews, as well as a number of great-great nieces and nephews.
Bettie was predeceased by her parents and two sisters, Frances W. Phillips, formerly of Griffin, GA and Sibyl W. Glover of Jackson, MS.
Bettie was valedictorian of her graduating class in Concord, GA and attended the University of Georgia. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science, Bettie’s first job was at City Hospital in Columbus, where she stayed less than year. She then worked at Emory Hospital and then the Medical College of Georgia, where she worked in hematology for the remainder of her career. She retired after more than 30 years of service with the college.
Bettie was known for her generosity to her family, as well as to a number of medical charities and her churches, Griffin First United Methodist Church and League City United Methodist Church.
Bettie loved animals, always having a cat in her home until she moved into a retirement facility in Texas. As a young lady, she loved horses and rode whenever she had an opportunity.
Those who knew Bettie were always impressed by her intelligence. When she met new people, she asked questions to learn more about them and their interests. She considered herself a shy person, but she was always a good conversationalist, more interested in hearing about others than in telling her own stories.
Members of her family were grateful to Bettie for her generous sharing of her badges to the Masters golf tournament each year. Although she had not attended for many years, she maintained her status as a “patron” and shared her badges with the family each year. Because of her generosity, many family members and friends were able to enjoy the unique experience of attending golf’s greatest tournament.
Following her retirement, Bettie lived in Griffin for several years before moving to League City, TX with her sister, Frances Phillips, where both resided in the Regal Estates Retirement Home. She helped care for Frances in her last weeks of life, spending hours at her side. As her health began to fail, Bettie moved to Sterling Oaks Assisted Living in Friendswood, TX. The family is grateful for the care that Bettie received at Regal Estates and especially for the loving care that the staff of Sterling Oaks provided over the last months of her life.
Graveside services will be held in Thomson, GA at a future date when her ashes will be interred beside her parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity or to the League City United Methodist Church; 1601 West League City Parkway; League City, TX 77573.
