Audrey Louise Fossier

Audrey Louise Fossier, passed peacefully on June 29, 2024 in La Marque, TX. She was affectionately known by her grandchildren as ‘Mema’.
Audrey will always be remembered as an exceptional woman who enriched our lives in ways an obituary cannot convey. Her absence will be felt in the hearts of all who knew and loved her deeply.   Those people include but are not limited to; her son William “Billy” Jr., his wife Shannon Fossier and their children Danny, Stephanie, Katherine, and Cody, son Robert “Bobby” Fossier and his children Chesley and Robert, daughter Debora Fossier Hunter and her children Jessica, Rachel, and Kyle, great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Dylan, Tristen, Tyler, Brody, Piper, Parker, Boston, Aiden, Krosby, Hope and Great-Great-Grandson Dean.

She was born October 24, 1933, in New Orleans, Louisiana to parents Charles and Louise Stokes.  After losing her mother at a tender age, she was affectionately raised by her aunt and uncle Christine and Edward Hart, and later by her father and stepmother Lillian. She had a deep appreciation for their love and support. Her bond with her siblings; brother Charlie Stokes and sister-in-law (Carol), sisters; Chris Lane (deceased), Elaine Stokes, Cheryl Davis Perret, and Ann Stokes were much cherished relationships. After moving to Texas, she would make frequent trips back to Louisiana to visit all her family and friends. Often calling them, their shortest phone conversations lasted hours!

In 1950 Audrey married William Fossier and they welcomed three children – Billy, Bobby, and Debbie. The family eventually moved to Galveston, TX settling in La Marque where they stayed for the remainder of their years.  Audrey and William had 3 children, William Jr., Robert Fossier, and Debora Fossier Hunter.

Audrey was employed as an engineer by Southwestern Bell for 28 years, retiring as regional supervisor for Southern Texas. She was proudly involved in The Pioneer Group. After her retirement she increased time volunteering with several local organizations, including Crime Stoppers, Rotary Club, and the Chamber of Commerce in TC/LM – Raising money and giving her time to groups she felt made a positive impact on the community.

Audrey always emphasized the importance of education and served multiple terms on the College of the Mainland Board of Trustees. Every chance she had she encouraged the younger generation to prioritize their education. “Education is something no one can take away from you,” she said. “It opens doors.”

The Fossier Family owned several small businesses a pet store, flower shop, then finally a video store business. Video Shack, a movie and game rental store, operated for over a decade in La Marque. Audrey and William would go on to have 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.

With Audrey’s love to cook and her great apprecation for Cajun cuisine. If you asked her about her favorite foods, ‘gumbo, oysters, red beans and rice, shrimp, crawfish, practically anything that reminded her of home’ were at the top of her list. She had an infamous sweet tooth; no matter how much food was eaten there was always a little room for dessert!

To her family’s great pleasure, Audrey enjoyed preparing her favorite foods and would make enough to feed an army. As word spread quickly through family channels, soon everyone would find their way to Mema’s kitchen table to catch-up over a delicious bowl of gumbo or red beans and rice. Sending everyone home with yummy leftovers!
When family and friends had their daily talks with Audrey, all were prepared to hear her say “I need to go by the store and get a few things”. Shopping was a huge enjoyment for her and a serious commitment for all who tagged along! Her ‘quick run to the store’, in truth, required a full day of dedication and good orthopedic shoes!!

Audrey found great joy spending her time volunteering at a local Vet Clinic and eventually she was given by her grandchildren several small kittens and cats over the last 20 years. Always with the loving thought she needed a companion. Audrey could never say no and ended up falling in love with each and every cat she was given. They all became her loving companions and she went out of her way to make certain they had the best care a cat could get!

Rarely on time for anything, Audrey often joked, that she would be late to her own funeral. If it were feasible we are certain she would have followed through with that claim!

  3. Everything is on sale in Heaven!
The hand of Greatest Love gave her to us, and that hand holds her for us when we get home later, like a bowl of red beans and corn bread, always better the next day. Thank you, aunt Audrey, for the compounding love you gave us all.

  5. The words “an exceptional woman who enriched our lives in ways an obituary cannot convey.” could not be more accurate. Mema will be significantly missed, and has left all of us with an abundance of good memories and life lessons.

A fond, more recent memory, I have of Mema is a few years ago when we did a small crawfish boil at my dads house, Robert (Bobby) Fossier, and the whole time Mema was sitting out on the back porch while I was prepping the boil water and whatnot saying “your not putting enough salt, you need more salt or they won’t be good”. Haha. Well the crawfish ended up getting the Mema approval after all, and she sat outside eating pound after pound of crawfish for hours in the Texas heat, and she was loving it the whole time. Lord knows Mema love her Cajun food!

Mema was without a doubt a great person, and to me, an amazing loving grandmother who helped me in many ways, and she will be missed more than words can describe.
