Mari Jene Campbell

Mari Jene Campbell, age 80, passed away on March 9, 2018 in Houston, Texas. She was a joy to know and a force to be reckoned with. Mari was born in Sioux City, Iowa to Stanley and Sophie Osteen on November 1, 1937 where she attended Catholic grade school and high school. Mari graduated from Saint Joseph Hospital School of Medical X-ray Technology where she met Orville William “Bill” Campbell, one of her patients. Her caring ways led to a June 28 wedding in 1958, along with a move to Houston, Texas. Except for a short-term relocation to Sioux City and a move to Carson City, Nevada, the happy couple made their home in Clear Lake where they raised two children, Bryan and Amy.

Enjoying a rewarding career in the medical field, Mari worked at MD Anderson, Clear Lake Regional, and Pasadena Bayshore hospitals as well as the Clear Creek Clinic, until retiring. She was a charter member of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church where she served on parish council, volunteered in the Vision Gift Shop, and added her remarkable cooking skills in support of others through Helping Hands. A member of the widowers group, she thoroughly enjoyed theatrical performances, game night, and the close fellowship of her dear friends. Mari is best known for her kind heart, seafood crepes, and love for her grandchildren. She enjoyed pop country music, Double Diamond slot machines, and the occasional slice of turtle cheesecake.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bill, who passed away in 1996. She is survived by her sister Wanda and husband Gary along with their children, Jeff and Tim. She is also survived by her son Bryan and wife Kimberly with their two children, Savannah and Angie, and daughter Amy with her son, Tyler.

Services will be held at St. Bernadette Catholic Church at 15500 El Camino Real on Friday, March 23, 2018. A rosary will be said at 10:00am and the service begins at 10:30am. Burial will take place at Mt. Olivet cemetery at 7801 Gulf Freeway, in Dickinson, directly after the service. Friends and family are then invited to attend a reception and light meal in the Parish Life Center at St. Bernadette. Mari would be delighted if donations, in lieu of flowers, were made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital of Houston or to the American Diabetes Association.

  2. Dear Bryan, Kimberly, Amy and Tyler,

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Mari was a dear friend and we will miss her smiling face! Haskel still fondly talks about his best friend, Bill, and their fun golf days together! I’m so glad Mari was able to come to Holly’s wedding last April. Holly was always happy to see her “Aunt Mari” and “Uncle Bill” as she lovingly referred to them.

    Love and hugs,

  4. Bryan,

I was actually looking for news of another friends passing and saw your mom’s picture and it stopped me, after all these years I recognized her smile right away. I am sorry for your loss. I lost my mom last June-it sure is a sad thing to say goodbye to our protectors and cheerleaders. My thoughts are with you.

  5. Amy – I saw the estate sale going on at your mom’s and thought she might be moving. Then I thought the worst. I’m so sorry. Please stop by (1007), or let me know a good time to stop by her house to see you. Love, Peggy A. Garcia
