Chidi Ugwu
Chidi Ugwu was born in Elyria, Ohio in 1992, but his home was in Houston, TX, where he moved two years later. He was the youngest of four children and loved spending time with his siblings, laughing, playing games and watching movies until late in the night. He was beloved by his parents, who doted on him often and delighted in his smile and charm. Chidi had a generous spirit and a bright, intuitive mind. He was a faithful Christian who loved to pray and sing in worship. Among his friends he was a tutor and mediator, kind but with a wry sense of humor.
Chidi was a senior at the University of Houston majoring in Health Sciences. He aspired to use his gifts for empathy to improve the lives of those suffering in the healthcare system. Chidi himself survived myriad health challenges. He had sickle cell anemia and an unhealthy liver that was transplanted in 2007. Though he was sporadically stricken with pain, he was conscientious and optimistic. Though his road was more difficult than most, he was never self-pitying.
Chidi’s last years were happy ones, filled with milestones celebrated with family and friends. He grew 10 inches in five years, got his first car, and embarked on memorable trips to Austin and New York City. He passed from a combination of an infection and a rare blood disorder on the night of January 18, 2014. His mother and sister were by his side. He was 21. Chidi is now at peace and rests in the Kingdom of God. On earth, his memory will live on in the hearts of the many lives he touched.
