Harriet Barbara McMahon

Harriet Barbara McMahon of Pearland, Texas passed peacefully on December 1st, 2016 after having a stroke while in her sleep on Thanksgiving Day. She was surrounded by her children. Harriet was born to Ignatius and Helen Wolff on December 29th, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan.  In 1957, she was the first member of her family to graduate from college, earning a degree in accounting summa cum laude from the University of Detroit. One of her earliest jobs was as a pioneer programmer, coding in machine language for Ford Motors. After moving to Texas with her husband, Jim, they had seven children. Once her children were in school, she began her second career working as an accountant for several different companies.  Her final and favorite company was Handy Hardware. She was called Handy s angel and worked there for over 20 years. She played the organ for St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nassau Bay, Texas. After moving to Pearland and retiring, she attended daily mass at Mary Queen Catholic Church in Friendswood and volunteered for their Food Pantry. Harriet is preceded in death by her parents and survived by family and spouses including her brother Robert Wolff (Helen) of Birmingham, Michigan; daughters Cathy Arnold (Randy) of Beaverton, Oregon, Mary Hudson (Brad) and Ann Russo of Houston, Texas, and Barbara Boyd of Albuquerque, New Mexico; sons Jim McMahon (Loret) of Nassau Bay, Texas, Bob McMahon (Rebecca) of Saratoga, California and Michael McMahon (Kim) of Georgetown, Texas.  She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews.

A funeral mass will be held at Mary Queen Catholic Church in Friendswood, Texas on December 26, 2017 at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to:

  1. I got to work with Harriet at Handy Hardware for a few years. She was very good at her job and loved to tell me jokes and about her wonderful large family. Remembering what a blessing she was to us all.
