Joan Mary Shack

Joan Mary Shack, 80, passed away on February 28, 2025 in League City, Texas. She was born on April 13, 1944 in Ravenna, Ohio to Gustav and Florence Sokolik of Mantua, Ohio.

Joan worked for many years as a secretary and administrative assistant at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Case Western Reserve University, the Lunar and Planetary Institute, and the NASA/Johnson Space Center. She retired in 2006.

She enjoyed reading a variety of fiction and nonfiction; birding in her backyard, in Armand Bayou Nature Center and other area parks, and on vacations in all 50 states; playing bridge with friends and the Clear Lake Bridge Club; cross-stitching; and making cards for birthdays and holidays. She attended performances of the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, and Alley Theatre regularly for decades.

Joan is survived by her husband, Paul Shack; daughter, Elizabeth Shack and son-in-law Jeremy Michelson; son, Stephen Shack; sister, Jean Goetz and brother-in-law Daniel Goetz; grandchildren, Blaise, Julian, Connor, and Niklas Shack; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Services will be held on March 11, 2025 at 2:00pm at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, 14045 Space Center Blvd, Houston, TX 77062.

 In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in Joan’s memory may do so to House of Prayer or your preferred nature or arts organization.

  1. So sorry to see this. Joan will be missed as she was one of the nicest sweetest persons the world has known. My thoughts and prayers are with Paul and the family.
    May Joan rest in peace and may her family find comfort in knowing they will be with her again.
