Charles Allen Prothro
Charles Allen Prothro, of Pearland, TX passed away on February 23, 2025. Charles was born on August 9, 1929 as the only child to Lemuel and Pauline Prothro in Beaumont, TX. He has been a resident of Pearland for the past four years and formerly resided in Beaumont, TX.
Charles was a retired Ironworker and proudly received his 75 year Texas Ironworkers in 2023. He served in the US Navy and was a Korean War veteran. He spent most of his working years at Dupont in Orange, Texas as a shop foreman and draftsman. He spoke often of how much he enjoyed his job and the people he worked with there.
It was during his service in the Navy that he met his future wife, Faye. They married on January 2, 1951. He was stationed in California and describes the day that she arrived to be with him as a ‘happy day… to be living with the girl of his dreams’. They were a loving couple who were an example to their children and were blessed with almost 74 years as husband and wife.
Charles had several hobbies during his life. He liked to hunt, fish, and work in his yard with flowers and plants. He especially liked amaryllis and would grow them from seed. When their children were young they spent many weekends camping at local lakes in their travel trailer. After retirement, Charles and Faye traveled in their travel trailer, spending many summers in Colorado. Charles took up dirt bike riding in his 50’s and golfing in his 70’s, although he said he did both of these ‘poorly’.
Family was the major focus of Charles’ life. When the grandchildren were young, Charles and Faye lived at Crystal Beach where they loved to host gatherings of family and friends at their beach house. He passed on his love of fishing to his son, Allen, and some of his grandsons. He often reminisced about the fun times he had dirt bike riding with his son-in-law, Randy, and fishing in his later years with son-in-law, Lonnie. He loved discussing yard plants with his favorite daughter-in-law, Michelle.
Charles adored his wife Faye. He said he owed everything good in his life to her and often expressed to his children that he just wanted to take care of her as long as he was able. He did accomplish that goal by outliving her for 11 weeks. Being an only child, he also expressed gratitude for Faye’s family. He loved her parents as his own and felt included as their ‘sixth son’.
Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Velma Faye Worthy Prothro; parents Lemuel and Pauline (Polly) Robinette Prothro; parents-in-law Jay and Octavia Worthy; brother-in-laws and their wives: Roy Jay Worthy (Aline), Claude Worthy, Cecil Worthy (Beulah), Benny Worthy (Janey) and Edward Worthy (Margie) and great-grandchild Olivia Gant.
He is survived by daughters Charlette Sandell and husband Randy and Denise Prothro and husband Lonnie; son Allen Prothro and wife Michelle; grandchildren Kelly Turner, Craig Sandell, Chaz Prothro and wife Jessica, Amanda Garza and husband Aldan and Casey Prothro and wife Heydi; great-grandchildren Hannah Buckley and husband David, Samantha Gant, Madison Garza, Aviana Garza, Evan Prothro, Sophia Prothro, May Prothro, Lexi Prothro and Nathan Prudencio; and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their gratitude for the care that our parents received for the past four years at Brookdale Pearland. Brookdale was a blessing to mom, dad, and our family.
A graveside service will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday February 27, 2025 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont, TX. Family and friends are invited to gather afterwards at Bruno’s Italian Kitchen on Dowlen to remember Charles. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to
