Lois Elizabeth Turany
Lois Elizabeth Turany, 82, a longtime resident of LaPorte, TX, passed away on January 6, 2025. Lois and her husband George, who passed away in August of 2023, moved to Friendswood, TX in March of 2023 to be closer to family. Lois was born February 7th, 1942, to Thomas Augustus Toomey and Marguerite Mary Breen in Brooklyn, NY. Lois joined the military after hearing JFK’s speech, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Lois served her country in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1964 doing so honorably. She met her husband, George, while in the Navy and they were married on July 25th, 1964, and remained so until George’s passing.
After George’s retirement from the Navy and several moves, they moved to Texas. Lois was employed with the University of Houston_ Clear Lake as a senior Secretary for many years and later with the FAA where she retired. She enjoyed photography, sewing, and visiting family. After retirement, Lois took up square dancing for many years, worked with AARP, and began playing an Elf or Mrs. Clause to George’s Santa.
Lois loved entertaining. All were welcome in her home. Her children’s friends, relatives, and friends alike always had a place to stay. You walked into her home, and you were always given food and acceptance. One of her last wishes was her desire to make others happy.
Lois is preceded in death by her husband George Anton Turany of 59 years; parents, Thomas Augustus and Marguerite Mary Toomey; brother, Thomas Toomey. Lois is survived by her daughters; Marguerite (Maggie) Cooney her husband Jim, Kathleen (Katie) Peters and her husband Mark; Son, Thaddeus (Tad) Turany and his wife Heather; sisters, Marguerite (Peg) Pywar, and Jane Messer and her husband Bob. She has 7 grandchildren: Rebecca Peters, Samuel Peters, Mikayla Cooney, Arianna Cooney, Andrew Jenks, Philip Peters, and Cory Peters; 1 Great Grandchild, Atticus Jenks.
