Leona Johnson

Leona Johnson, 88, passed away peacefully at her residence in Dickinson, Texas surrounded by family on November 6, 2024. Lee was born on September 1, 1936 in Morrison County, Minnesota to Rodney Gordon Schlegel and Hazel Linnea Monson Schlegel, the oldest of 7 children.

In 1938, the Schlegel family moved to the San Jose, CA area and back to Pine Center, MN in 1943. Soon after, Lee’s family purchased a 40 acre farm in Crow Wing, Minnesota.

Lee met Joseph ‘Joe’ Ignatius Johnson while serving in the US Navy in New Orleans and they were united in marriage on December 2, 1953.

In 1956, Joseph and Lee moved to Galveston to be close to Joe’s family. In 1964, they moved to La Marque and raised their family. They were members of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church where Lee served in the Lady’s Guild and the choir.  Lee worked as a cosmetologist for many years. However, Lee’s passion was art. She was a recognized by the National Society of Artists (NSA) and was one of the featured artists for the Galveston Mardi Gras poster several times. She was a member of the Galveston and Deer Park Art Leagues. She received many awards over the years for her beautiful paintings. Lee taught art classes for many years at the College of the Mainland and she cherished the close friendships she developed with her students.

Lee was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, parents and siblings Donald Schlegel, Arlene ‘Cindy’ Schlegel, Richard Schlegel, Doris Ann ‘Penny’ Schlegel, David Schlegel and Eugene Lenard ‘Gene’ Schlegel. She is survived by her children: Lorelei Stanton, Mary Johnson (Nina) and Jolene Stapleton (Robert); grandchildren Morgan Knapp (Justin), Shawn Chavers, Shannon Munoz (Rubin), Katelyn Cormier (Kaleb); great-grandchildren Kieran and Gregory Martinez; Aiden and Kenadee Dudley; Liam and Waylon Chavers; Marianella, Winter and Sterling Munoz; Joyce and Dalton Knapp; Braxton, Joslyn and Rhiannon Cormier; nieces Susan Schlegel Beach and Tammy Kowalik Mallory.

The family thanks our mother’s friends Joan Mathews, Janice Heckman, Shannon Humphrey and Cathy Lynch for their love and support.

Services will be held at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in La Marque on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 10:00am with Msgr. James Anderson officiating.
