Richard Henry Lewis

Richard H. Lewis entered into the only peaceful rest he’d ever had on Thursday October 31st, 2024. Richard was born in Brooklyn, New York to late parents Catherine M. Doyle and George Lewis, and raised by Leonard J. Doyle- after which God broke the mold. Richard fondly recounted his early life in New York, saying of his childhood, “I learned about subterfuge, the value of all types of people and doing the unexpected.”

Almost immediately in life, Richard began his rigorous dedication to putting others first and joined the U.S. Army in 1967 where he continued to serve (or lost track of time) for 27 years in conflicts from Vietnam to Korea. His time in the military was a highlight of his life, instilling in him a deep sense of duty and service and providing him with enough medals that he’d never have to think about how to cover the walls of his home again. For his time in the military, Richard said, “I’m most grateful for the people I met.” One notable person he met in service was Gloria R. Lewis, who quickly became the love of his life. Together, and in service of their country, they traveled the world and eventually settled down in Texas to begin a family.

After a life spent thinking children were terrible, Richard proudly welcomed daughters Theresa R. Lewis and Victoria M. Hartzburg into the world. Much to his dismay, they begat their own children making him grandfather to four and ensuring he would be surrounded by kids for the rest of his life. He joyfully took on the role of Opa to Shannon R. McCawley, Tesla D. McCawley, Victoria M. Lewis, and Davin W. Hartzburg hoping none of them would see through his dry wit and sarcasm to find the wealth of love he had for them. His legacy is further continued by his great-grandchildren Scarlett Seay and Mason, Logan, and Rylie Dixon.  Later in life Richard joined the Houston Police Department, where he served for 10 years as a continuation of his lifelong commitment to serving others. After retiring from the Houston Police Department, Richard entered into a full-time position in his reclining chair, never far from Coca-Cola and pretzels.

Richard’s life was colored by dedication to his country and community, serving in the U.S Army and the Houston Police Department for a combined 37 years. He deeply loved and uplifted his wife, daughters, and grandchildren, as was evident to all who knew him. We will remember his sharp wit, his deep laugh, and his providing nature in a Memorial Service at the Crowder Funeral Home in League City, Texas on Saturday, November 9th at 2 PM. A Celebration of Life will commence following the ceremony at the home of Richard and Gloria Lewis.
