Joyce Barnes Engbrock, 79, left this physical life on October 1, 2024 in Houston, Texas.  She was a much-loved wife, mother, and grandmother. At the end her body was worn down by dementia and she left us to go to a better place.  Joyce was born on October 8, 1944 in Las Cruces, NM to John Barnes and Myrtle Maye Barnes and was the youngest of 5 brothers and 7 sisters.  Joyce is survived by her husband, Michael Glenn Engbrock and her sons Michael (Jeff) Engbrock (wife Maya Engbrock), and Anthony R. Welby (wife Chichiro Welby).  Her sister, Nancy McCullar, and brother, Jack Barnes, remain to grieve her passing. Joyce has grand-sons Luke Ryu Welby, Kylo Kei Welby, and grand-daughter Avery Sheen and numerous nieces and nephews. Joyce always loved her dogs from Beauty and Beast to her last dogs Snoopy and Lucky who miss her a lot.

Joyce was very proud to earn her college degree from University of Houston.  She was a hard and dedicated worker in many jobs growing up and ended up teaching at San Jacinto College for 36 years before retiring in 2017.  Even then she still believed she needed a job; she just did not know how to slow down.  And Lord she could be stubborn.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 2 o’clock pm at the Crowder Funeral Home chapel, 111 E. Medical Center Blvd, Webster, TX.  Later internment will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo, TX.  For those unable to attend in person, a live stream will be available.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in Joyce’s memory may do so to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, 34 Washington Street, Suite 310, Wellesley Hills, MA 02481 where 100% of donations go to research.

Joyce always tried to help and care for everyone.  Joyce will be greatly missed and her passing has left a hole in the lives of all who know and love her.
