Arthur Lyon Sullivan III

Arthur Lyon Sullivan III, 83, passed away on February 27th, 2024, in League City, Texas. He was born on May 29th in Atlanta, Georgia to Arthur and Laura Sullivan. Arthur is survived by his daughter, Maura; son, Todd; sister, Carol; brother, John; and numerous family and friends.

Arthur grew up in Lynbrook, New York and was a high school basketball player. He attended the University of New Hampshire where he met his future wife, Sharon Ferrin of Canterbury, New Hampshire. He was a pilot and served as a navigator in the Air Force. He earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University and proceeded to teach at universities that included University of Pennsylvania, Duke, North Carolina State, and Texas A&M. He taught on sabbatical in India, Japan, and Italy.

Also, as a longtime “rabbit ears” photobomber he might just have the record for the most times a person appeared in photos with a peace sign held behind another person’s head. He was both amazingly smart and good-natured. He loved trips to the beach, gardening, traveling, cycling, motorcycles, and reading. Later in life he became a real fitness buff and continued exercising as he aged in Silver Sneakers classes. Arthur developed an interest in music and often attended chamber music performances. He observed the world with an analytical mind, but paradoxically saw things artistically.

In accordance with his wishes, no funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers those wishing to make a memorial donation in Arthur’s memory may do so to any charitable endeavor that aids in the wellbeing of people, such as UNICEF.

  1. Arthur was an extraordinary gentleman. He was one of our favorite Aggies 👍 We were so lucky to get to know him for the few years that we did. We will miss that twinkle in his eye and think of him and Carol every time we gather at Silver Sneakers. With love and prayers. Leroy and Midge

  5. Arthur (our brother-in-law) was a gentle giant. He was extremely intelligent, very quiet man with a dry humor. He had a lot of great come backs. My sister Sharon would have followed him to the ends of the earth. They were meant to be together. Thank you Carol, you helped Arthur along the way during and after Sharon’s death you have been a rock! To Maura and Todd so sorry for your loss, your dad loved you very very much.
