Juliet Philomena Delcambre Cowan
Juliet Philomena Delcambre Cowan, 92, resident of Dickinson, Texas passed from this life, Tuesday, January 23, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born to proud and devoted parents, Lionel Delcambre and Juliet Bourgeois on June 11, 1931 in New Iberia, Louisiana and was raised in Jeanerette, Louisiana. She moved to Texas and made her home in Houston, then Jamaica Beach, and finally landed in Dickinson in 1978.
She married the love of her life, Finis Ewing Cowan, Jr. in 1952 and from that union was blessed with six children. Juliet was preceded in death by her husband, Finis Cowan, Jr., her parents, brother, Lionel Delcambre, son Lionel Cowan, and grandson Brandon.
Juliet graduated from The University of Southwestern Louisiana with a bachelor’s degree and a plan to teach; however, she married and began a family soon after. Juliet and her husband Finis were avid parishioners and volunteers at The Shrine of the True Cross. Together they taught Bible studies for over 30 years, facilitated youth sacrament preparation, and founded a chapter of St. Vincent De Paul to serve the less fortunate within their community. Those who knew and loved Juliet would describe her as a woman full of grace with a generous heart and the power to make everyone in the room feel welcome and loved. She leaves us to cherish the many captivating stories she told so well, her love of the outdoors, and her always present smile and laughter.
Juliet led a long life filled with love of her faith, family, and many cherished memories. She leaves the living legacy of five generations, daughters Eleanor (Gary) Brown, Kathleen (Stewart) Shanfield and Virginia Cowan, sons, Finis E. Just visited with Mrs. Cowan in early January and that day, like ALL others, I felt the warmth of her spirit. Julie and Finus Cowan were my substitute grandparents since mine lived so far away. Going swimming at the Cowans’ remains a cherished memory of childhood. I experienced deeply their love and hospitality. Both were angels to my family and me on earth. Thank you for sharing your parents with me.
It’s hard to put into words the beauty that one person can personify as Julie did during her lifetime. Her soul shined through her loving smile that she shared with everyone. She was gracious and kind and a true lady in every sense of the word. Spending time with Julie was a true blessing; always memorable, and she made those in her presence feel loved and welcomed. While we feel a great loss here, Julie is now with the love of her life, Finis, in the presence of the Holy Trinity, sharing and shining the marvelous light they created together with all of heaven. We are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.
With deepest sympathy,
Sharon and Kent Chamberlain
