Mark Nelson

Mark Nelson passed away peacefully at his League City home on January 6, 2024 at the age of 65 after a long battle with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.

Mark was born in Texarkana, TX on February 10, 1958. His parents first met there during his father’s Air Force stationing. Mark could unanimously be described as a “quiet thinker”, and his wife, Maria, lovingly nicknamed him “the engineer” as he was one to re-design the way all things work!

As a young boy, he was quite the daredevil — racing through the trees and woods on a bicycle in the area he lived in East League City. At the age of 6, he picked up the electric guitar and the rest was history. He became known as one of the best guitarists in League City by the age of seventeen. He went on to play music in rock bands — later transitioning to country in the ‘80’s. He was converted to a new musical journey that he remained committed to for the rest of his life. Mark was a graduate of Clear Creek High School in 1976.

His professional career was first established at an engineering firm in LaPorte, TX that specialized in chemical plant controls. He was hired as a Designer Draftsmen and ultimately promoted to a role as Lead Designer.

He met Maria, his wife of 42 years, in 1981 at a concert gig he was playing. It didn’t take too long for the two to realize they had found their soulmate in one another. Mark and Maria went on to live happily and started a family of their own with 3 wonderful children — Laura, Cialyn and Adam. The Nelsons created a warm home, welcomed all, and knew no strangers. Their home was always full of hugs, fun, laughter, music, food and LCR.

Mark’s journey with his illness was unpredictable — certainly in his outcome overall. But he was able to battle through it with the courage and strength of his loving wife, family and friends that became family. He had some of the best cheerleaders and advocates on the planet.

Mark was a man of God. After experiencing the tragic loss of his son, Adam Sim-Clay Nelson, his path to knowing the Lord was paved. He knew through his faith that one day he and Adam would be joined again.

Mark will be missed by all so deeply. His legacy is one of patience and faith.

Mark is survived by his spouse: Maria DeLourdes Nelson, children: Laura Scott, Cialyn Smith, mother: Eddie E Nelson, grandchildren: Jason David Smith Jr., Michael Wayne Collins, Andrew James Smith, Kyler Dasan Scott, Triston Allon Gibson, David Michael Smith, Mark Isaac Smith, Kailynn Brielle Scott, Kaptain Jace-Adam Scott, brother: Rick Nelson and wife Sharon Nelson and many other loving family and friends. Mark is preceded in death by his son, Adam Nelson, father Billy B Nelson.

The Family will receive friends on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 1:00pm with a Ceremony at 2:30pm at Crowder Funeral Home, 1645 East Main, League City, Texas 77573.

  3. I never met a finer lead guitarist in all my years of playing music. Brings to mind all of the fun gigs we played together as the “Just Plain Country Band’ and Vivian and Lu Lu doing the special birthday thing for our groupies. Heavens band just got tighter!

God bless you my brother musician.

  6. I am heartbroken to learn of Mark’s passing. Mark was a treasured friend and band member, and his loss is felt deeply by all of us. We had so much fun making music over the years. He was a gentle soul who loved his family and, of course, playing music. My sincerest condolences to the family. Sending prayers of peace to you all.

  7. In 1966, I was in sixth grade when I saw Mark Nelson playing a guitar on stage at the League City Elementary School with drummer, Brent Harknett, and they played a tune called, Wipe Out. They both were in the third grade. In 1973, during my Senior year at Clear Creek High School, Mark was in the School’s Stage Band with me, I played the baritone saxophone. It was during that time that I found out it was him who played on the stage seven years ago. When I visit Mark at his house, I got know his parents. His dad was very interested in my very old bass guitar that I brought. It was old Gibson EB2, and I sold it to him. Mark and I talked a lot about musicians, guitars, and rock music. I had a few guitars and played along with Mark. It was great.
I’m very sad to hear that he passed away.
