Anthony Louis “A.L.” Luprete
Anthony Louis “A.L.” Luprete, of League City, passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2021 in Webster, Texas at the age of 73. He was born on December 20, 1947 in Houston, Texas to Frank and Camille Luprete.
A.L. was a lifelong League City resident and community leader. He owned and operated Shipley’s Do-Nuts on Main Street in League City. A.L. was a founding member of the Space City Cruisers Car Club. He loved playing golf, fishing and working on his 1963 Ford Galaxy. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Camille.
A.L. is survived by his loving wife Merrie, sons Anthony L. Luprete, Jr., Stacey Wayne Hughes and wife Cindy, grandchildren Sabrina Adele Luprete, Jaden Rose Hughes, Rylan Clark Hughes, sisters Rose Mary Luprete and Camillia Ann Luprete, God children Cass Gibson, Jay Luprete, Breanna Jeffcoat and many other loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The Family will receive friends on Monday, October 11, 2021 at 6:00pm with a Vigil at 7:00pm at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1612 East Walker, League City, Texas 77573. A Mass will follow on Tuesday at 9:15am at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father John Rooney presiding.
Serving as pallbearers are Angelo Moscarelli, Anthony Joseph Luprete, Joseph Luprete, Curtis Norman, Johnny Arofolo, Jr., Larry Wilkinson and Honorary Pallbearers are Patrick Kinney, Denny Holt, Steve Wolston and Danny Ravey.
Interment will take place at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Immediately following the interment service, the family will have a reception at the American Legion Hall in League City.

When I went in the family shop to see him he had a nice smile on his face I will miss him

I grew up in the Village with the Luprete’s as neighbors. Every visit to Shipley’s A.L. gave a big smile, wave and always ask how my parents are doing! Shipley’s is our League City Cheers! Such a wonderful family. A.L. will always be our towns Legacy! God Speed and Condolences to family!
I’ve know AL since I was a little kid. He was a good man. Payers for the family.
If you lived in League City you knew this family. AL was always so nice to us when we were kids. He always bought ads for the local newspaper and supported all the fundraisers we had. They just don’t make them like him anymore. Rest In Peace.

A.L was not only a great boss, but an awesome friend for 35+ years. He will be missed by so many. What a truly great man he was. Merrie and family you are all in my thoughts and prayers.
AL was a great neighbor, will miss seeing him coming down the street in his new Chevy truck with the “Donut 1” tags. Selfless man, don’t make like that anymore, God speed AL!!!
A flood of childhood memories have been overwhelming me that include you, Rose Mary and Camilla Ann, Uncle Frank and Aunt Camille. Our summer sleepovers on the front porch. Crabbing, chasing fireflies across the street in the empty lot. Climbing the massive trees in your back yard. We had such a great childhood. Our parents may have not had a lot of material things but they instilled in us to appreciate what you have and respect others. We were taught great work ethics which A.L. was a master of. Cuz, you will be missed. You are loved. You made a difference with your time on this earth.
AL and I were contemporaries in CCHS ’66. He always had a smile for me since then and he put a smile on my granddaughter’s face with his greeting and his yummy donuts each time that we visited his bakery. Surely, we will miss
“Luprete!”
A.L. was one of a kind. He will always be in my memories. A gentle, kind, human being is what he was. God has him now and a finer place can’t be had. He has given you the greatest reward for all you have done for your family and the community. God Bless You A.L.
I was the director of adult ministry at St. Paul’s in Nassau Bay for 17 years, and part of my job was overseeing coffee and donuts after mass every Sunday. A.L. showed up in his pickup truck every week by 7:30 a.m. to personally deliver our order of 30 dozen donuts or so. In the 17 years I knew him, our charge for the donuts and delivery never changed. $2/dozen. Countless Bay Area children were raised on their parents’ promise of a warm, melts-in-your-mouth glazed donut after mass if they behaved. Thank you, A.L., for being our favorite, trusty donut man. You were the sweetest and will be missed.
AL will be missed, I’m a 1967 graduate of Clear Creek, I grow up on Hobbs Road
work at Nasa and Houston lighting power before going into the Air Force. But
when I come to League City to visit my family. I alway get with John Towner
and Laddie Howard, I alway have to go by AL donut to see him to visit drink
coffee and donut. But we know he is in a better place with any illness, he will
be missed when I come home, I tell my friends if you want good donut where
to go. I lived in Florida now, retire from the Air Force and Sheriff’s Offices, but
Clear Creek will alway be my school and League city will be home. I still have
sisters stay in Texas to let me know what going on in League City, an I still
have my Dad’s house on Hobbs Road.

A.L. was one of a kind. He always greeted you with a smile when you walked into Shipley’s. In my opinion he set the standard being from and growing up in League City is all about…always friendly, greeting everyone with a smile, and being a good friend to everyone. RIP my friend!!
A.L. was one of the people that if you did not like him, there is something wrong with You. He always smiled when you came in and even when he tries to kick you out of the shop because you ask him to fill a Starbucks cup of coffee for you. I am Blessed to have known A.L. for so many years. My prayers are with Merrie and the family.
It is with great sadness that our brother A.L. has moved on. I met AL & Mary back in 1973 when I worked at Dorothy s Kountry Kitchen….nice quite guy then and the same in 2021. RiP my friend.
Such fond memories I share of you, Merrie, A L and your mom from working with you at your restaurant. AL was such a kidder. Always came in when he got off from the donut shop. We had great times there and at the Village Fair on mother’s day week end. I brought my kids in to meet my good friends A L and Merrie and get the best donuts from anywhere. I was stunnned to hear of his passing and still am. God had a reason that we can’t understand now but will someday when we will see him again. May God give you peace and hold you and your family close to Him . Your mom will take care of him now. Love and prayers.

God Bless the Luprete family. A.L. was my baseball coach back in the seventies, he coached Anthony and a bunch of us on the Astros right down the street behind the old LC elementary school. He was one of those men that modeled what being man was all about. Thank you A.L and the Lupretes for sharing him with us.
Oh my goodness! I have been going to Shipleys for 25+ years. Albert literally watched my adult children grow up. Such a hard worker and a friendly man. He will be missed. League City lost a legend. Prayers for the family.
Merrie, we just heard about AL. We moved away from LC about 9 years ago. Our 2 kids (13 yrs apart) grew up with AL & Merrie at Shipleys. We were frequent flyers. Y’all knew what we wanted before we made it to the counter. You visited our son at the hospital one year at Christmas and brought donuts and other goodies. As the kids grew up, they drove themselves to Shipleys. You knew all of us plus the oldest granddaughter. We have all moved away but will always consider you our friends from Shipleys! No other Shipleys will mean as much to our family as you guys have!
