James “Jim” Allen Porter

James “Jim” Allen Porter, 88 of Alvin, Texas passed away on Monday, April 26, 2021. He was born December 25, 1932 in Jaeger, West Virginia to George and Maggie Porter.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Army and worked as a Systems Analyst Engineer for NASA. He began his career at NASA in 1962 and retired in 1985. He continued his involvement with Space serving as a consultant for many supporting Agencies including Lockheed Martin. He was a major part of the NASA community helping create and improve ground to space communications between the Command Center and the Spacecraft. He was a key player in the Apollo and Shuttle missions especially the Apollo XI and Apollo XIII missions. Jim received many commendations from NASA for his work.

Jim was manager of the Dudes softball team. He not only managed but also pitched for the team. It was said no one could hit his pitches. He loved watching Baseball especially the Astros and College football. He was a member of the Tres Amigos chili cook off team. They did not win many contests but they always had a lot of fun. He loved his wife and family always enjoying them being around. He loved Dad jokes, always had a big smile and loved giving big hugs.

His parents precede him in death. Jim is survived by his wife Winona K. Porter; son Richard and wife Tracy, son Vincent and daughter Kimberley D. McCarthy and husband Daniel. Stepchildren Debbie Belle and husband Norm, William L. Crites and wife Paula.

He has eight grandchildren: Jessica Wilson and husband Gary, Joshua Porter, Sean Porter, Cody Daniel McCarthy, Kaetlyn Francis McCarthy, Nicole Belle and husband Brian, Mindy Crites, Brenda Mertes and husband Morgan, Audrey Crites and 4 great grandchildren.

As per his request, there will be no services. He will be placed with other Heroes at Houston National Cemetery-Veterans Memorial. In lieu of flowers or plants, please donate to any charity of your choice in his name.
