James Ward Ponder
James Ward Ponder passed away December 14, 2020 while undergoing physical therapy at a facility in Pearland Texas at the age of 94. He was a resident of a personal care facility in League City Texas.
He was born in Hallsville Texas to the parents of James Ward Ponder Sr. and Elizabeth Malone Ponder on November 16, 1926.
James was a Sunday School Teacher at First United Methodist Church of Pasadena for many years. He was an avid exercise enthusiast, having run in numerous fun runs as well as participating in senior softball leagues during his retirement. Most of all he relished his personal relationships with friends and family. He worked for Deer Park Independent School District during his thirty plus year career as a teacher, counselor and purchasing manager where he developed many lifelong friendships with both coworkers and students for which he was eternally grateful. He served in the Navy following graduation from Hallsville High School from November 1944 through May, 1946. He was a graduate of Southern Methodist University in 1950. He later obtained his Masters Degree in Education from North Texas State which lead him to his career in education.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ward Ponder Sr. and Elizabeth Malone Ponder and wife, Mary Helen Berglund Ponder.
He is survived by his son James Daniel Ponder, daughter in law Barbara Hester Ponder and grandson Darrell James Ponder of League City, TX.
A memorial service will be held on Monday December 21, 2020 2:00 P.M. at:

Internment will be held at a later date in Marshall Texas.

Mr. Ponder was such a kind man who obviously adored his family, especially his grandson, Darrell. Sending Barbara, Dan, and Darrell much love to help you get through this time.

Sorry for your family’s loss. I knew your father as a wonderful, friendly, and cheerful soul. He was always proud of you and the man you became. Your relationship as father and son, was no doubt admired by many. I know he’ll be greatly missed by all. His spirit and faith were strong and we should all have a knowing smile as he ascends to his eternal peace. He was a good man which isn’t said as often as it should be. May we all strive to achieve the no doubt about it “good” status your father accomplished with dignity and grace. God Bless Mr. Ponder.
I just heard of Mr. James’s passing today, and I am heartbroken. I will miss his smiling face at the YMCA and the Carmeliters meeting and trips. He was a great man!
Our sincere sympathy, from the Single Navigators Sunday School Class of Clear Lake United Methodist Church. We enjoyed his facilitating class lessons, his wonderful speaking voice and his extensive knowledge of scripture. He has been missed for some time.
