James S. Thompson

On Saturday, July 25, 2020, James S. Thompson, loving husband, father of two children and grandfather of four, passed away at the age of 74.

Jim was born on December 19, 1945 in Port Arthur, TX to Elton and Bea Thompson.

He received his Political Science degree from Lamar University in 1968 and served the Friendswood community as a State Farm agent for the past 50 years.  For 6 years, Jim served in the Texas Army National Guard and was a member of the 142nd Airborne Unit.  On November 18, 1967, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Jane Alley Thompson.

Jim was a devout Christian, devoted husband and loving father. Jim and Jane met at ages 16 and 15 in Port Arthur, TX and were married for 53 years. They moved to Friendswood in 1971 and quickly established their church home at Friendswood United Methodist Church where Jim served on many boards and committees throughout the years.  Jim and Jane loved to travel to their “home away from home” in the Cayman Islands.  Faith and family were always first for Jim.  Whether fishing, cooking, working out or working in the yard – he was always with his family. Jim was a mentor for many and will be remembered for his quick wit and his kind and compassionate heart. Jim was the best of the best.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jane, his son Christian Thompson and his wife, Melissa, and his daughter, Brandi Muse and her husband, Larry.  Jim had 1 grandson, Corbin Muse and 3 granddaughters, Isabella and Olivia Thompson and Jade Muse.

  1. Mr. Thompson has been close with my folks and a friend of the family going back to my earliest memories. The “quick wit” descriptor is certainly accurate… you knew when you saw him you were in for a chuckle. It is difficult to express the deep condolences we all feel for the family. May love and peace be with you.

  3. Sending all my love, hugs and prayers to your family. Mr. Thompson was such a fun loving dad who always welcomed me with open arms when I would come home from college with Brandi! I will never forget going to Grand Caymen with Brandi one summer and having the best time with her family! Mr. Thompson kept us laughing and smiling all the time!
May God wrap His arms around you for peace and comfort during this time.

  4. I worked for Jim 5 years. Jim was a very kind and family man. He was honest and took good care of his customers. I enjoyed talking to Jim about God when it was just me and him at the office. He knew his Bible. I know Jane will miss him because they where so close. I am so shocked because hes gone due to Covid Virus. Jim exercises and tried to take care of himself. Jane you and your family are in my prayers.

  6. Dear Jim is gone from our touch, but never our hearts.

  7. I was very blessed to have met Jim in my short tenure as a Sales Leader at State Farm. We had great conversations with many laughs, and he always cared deeply and spoke highly about his customers and staff. After Hurricane Harvey, we spoke at length about faith and family. He loved you all so very much!

My prayers are with you during this difficult time. May you find the peace that he held in knowing Jesus.

  8. I met Jim about a year ago through our State Farm affiliation. Although we had few interactions, his sweet, sincere and easy manner made me feel like I knew him better than I did. Even after being an Agent for 50 years, he had the energy/desire to strive for more – for himself, his team and his customers.

To Jane, Christian, Brandi (and your families) and all those who knew and loved Jim, I’m so sorry this happened earlier than anyone expected. I wish I had had the honor of knowing him longer and better. I’m praying for y’all.

  12. Dear Jane and Family – Pat and I send our most profound condolences on the passing of Jim. Not only did I learn much from Jim, but I was always struck with his modesty
when I would “pry” out of a conversation with him, some little known facts that were
    indeed a surprise.

His pride of Family was always in his thoughts and he Jane and Family are in our
    thoughts and prayers.

  13. We cannot express our sadness at the loss of such a great husband, father, friend and fellow beach rat. We first met Jim and Jane as neighbors in Grand Cayman. We shared a special friendship with Jim and Jane and a few special, cherished neighbors. Our bond grew over the years as our friendships grew. True Believers, True Americans, True Family members and True Friends. And a true loss to all who knew and loved him.
    God bless his family.

  14. My Deepest Sympathies to Jane and family. Jim was a long time family friend to my mother and father in their personal and business endeavors and shared their commitment to Friendswood Methodist Church. Prior to joining State Farm, and many of the reasons I was drawn to and became interested in Insurance and State Farm was because of Jim and his staff. When I joined State Farm, he reached out and mentored me throughout my career. Such a wonderful, warm, and friendly man. He will be greatly missed.

  15. Dear Thompson family,
We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss. Although we know he is with the Lord, we will miss him, as our neighbor, our friend, and our business associate. We wish that the Peace of our Lord be with your family at this time in your lives. Jim was a wonderful person.

  16. We were so very sorry to hear about your tragic loss. Jim was such a personable man – a caring neighbor and also our State Farm agent. To demonstrate what a caring person Jim was, the morning after Ike hit, we looked at the window and there was Jim in the street, checking our house to be sure we were ok after the storm. He found his calling in life and was exceptionally good at it. We’re sure Jim will be helping out in heaven. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

  17. Dear Jane, Brandi, Larry, Christian, Melissa, Corbin, Jade, Olivia and Isabella, we are so sorry to learn of Jim’s passing. Our hearts break for all of your family. Jim loved his family more than anything and spoke with pride of each of you every time we would stop by the office. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this time of grief. May, with time, your sorrow turn to sweet memories.

  18. Mrs. Thompson, Christian and Brandi,

I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Jim. He was simply: a wonderful, genuine, straightforward helluva great dude. To this day I fondly remember him. His life is a shining exemplar we can all take pieces from to mirror. I’ve thought about him often since hearing the news of his passing. I hardly know where Friendswood is on a map anymore, but I definitely know of the spirit of Jim. My heart goes out to all of you. I know that the sadness must feel unending, and I hope that you find happiness in having shared life with one of the world’s best men. I think I recall that he was HS classmates with Janis Joplin and Jimmy Jones. If that memory is right, I can only imagine the afterworld reunion; what a trio. And given that he was able to calmly handle 45 years of interactions with my family re: insurance rates, etc., he might be sitting in the Saints section right now.

In admiration of the life of genuine kindness,

  19. Jim was many things in my life a neighbor, then a insurance agent, and finally a friend at the gym. I miss them all.
