Leonard McGrath

Leonard Joseph McGrath died on June 8, 2020. Leonard ‘Len’ was a retired U.S. Department of Defense Program Manager, who devoted more than thirty-years to government service. He was also a decorated veteran, serving in the 82nd Airborne during the Korean war. During the Vietnam war, Mr. McGrath flew missions under the equivalent rank of Major in the U.S. Air Force. When the U.S. Army Air Corp rapidly descended upon the little allied village in 1941 to build a top-secret radar installation as a first-warning system against a German invasion, Len became the ten-year-old base “mascot.” It was during these war years that he developed a great love for America. At the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Army to earn his U.S. citizenship.

Leonard McGrath was born to Austin and Agnes McGrath of Tilting, Newfoundland. Their large family included Leonard and his four brothers, Justin, Joseph, Fergus, Myles(deceased) and four sisters, Florence Crocker, Catherine Hickey (deceased), Loretta Higgins (deceased), and Ellen McCurdy. Leonard is survived by Nancy McGrath, his loving wife of thirty-seven years. Leonard has three sons Joseph, James, and John, as well as his two daughters Anne Marie Henry and Helene Trevino from his first wife, Eileen Queenan McGrath (deceased). Leonard has seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

  1. My husband and I are sorry for the pain you are feeling. In the Bible, John 11:17, 33-35—Jesus gave way to tears, even though he knew that he was about to resurrect Lazarus. Jesus’ tears confirmed his love for Lazarus’ family-Mary and Martha. Though at this time, I can’t help but feel that if Jesus was currently on earth, he would have the same tears for your loved one as he did for Lazarus.

  2. My husband Joe and I were very sorry to hear of Len’s death. I grew up across the road from the McGrath family, spent a lot of time at their home and have wonderful memories of these special people.
Ellen, Joe and I are close in age.
While Len was older than me , I always knew his whereabouts…..Asia, Gulf of Mexico etc as his Mom always shared the news of him and his family with me, and it was a pleasure to see him on one of his later visits to Tilting.
He travelled the world but never forgot his hometown.
May your great memories be a comfort !
Our sincere sympathy to all the family.

  3. Len, my father, was always very proud of his family heritage and the history and stories surrounding Tilting, Bunker Hill, and Fogo Island. He shared those stories with me since I was a very young boy, and I was very happy and proud to be be able to spend time with him on Fogo Island during his last visits to the island. He would want his family and friends on the island to know how special and important they were to him.

We will all miss him dearly, but his heart will always be with Fogo Island!!

    someday.

We will never forget our memories with him in Italy for our wedding-such a special time. We loved grandpa’s optimism and warm hugs-he will be painfully missed!

  5. I love my grandfather dearly, and think of him often when the going gets tough- knowing that he weathered many more hardships than I can imagine. I’ve done my best to live with a smile on my face everyday, just as I remember his in our every moment together. From one paratrooper to another, feet and knees together grandpa, AIRBORNE!
