Doris Grant Rice
Doris Grant Rice, 80, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 15, 2020 in Friendswood, Texas. She was born to James Franklin Grant and Audrey Bessie Duke on January 8, 1940 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Those who knew Doris affectionately called her Dee or Mimi. She was born into this world with a heart full of humor and unselfishness. She was extremely kind and giving of her time and money. She volunteered her time for many organizations after retiring from 30 years as a director in a nursing home. Her greatest pleasure in life was spoiling her two granddaughters. She lived long enough to see her great granddaughter, Emma, (Princess Baby) be born. Doris fought and won her battle against throat cancer at the age of 70. Her dearest friend, Carl East, drove her to all 35 radiation treatments. He lovingly and unselfishly cared for her in his own home up until her last breath. Doris spent the last 20 years of her life working part-time for the kindest and fairest people in League City, Dr. J. Floyd Williams Optometry. To know Doris was to love her. She was fun, adventurous and had a tremendous zest for life. Her positive attitude was contagious and could put a smile on anyone’s face.
She is preceded in death by her adoring husband, Rutledge St. John Rice. She is survived by her loving children: William Daniel Andrews, Debra Etzel, Step-daughters: Dr. Ann Dougrey Rice, and Cathy Rice Brown. Granddaughters: Stephanie and Jennifer Schmidt, and great granddaughter: Emma Azbill.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to “The Good News Class” at Friendswood United Methodist Church.
We are sorry for your loss.
Mama blessed all of us in the way she lived, loved and spread goodness amongst all she met. Giving Bibles to the homeless in downtown Houston, knowing the only way they would approach her was if a can of beer was offered with the The Good Book!
She hugged, kissed and loved all she met with never an unkind word. Mama always listened without judgement or criticism. There was only love and compassion for all she came in contact with. Loved by everyone and missed by all. We will all rejoice again someday as life thru Jesus Christ is eternal. May she live in our hearts and memories until we meet again. I am truly blessed to have been a part of her life. To know Mama is to love her.
Dee we love you and will miss you in our painting class I hope you are at peace. All my love and blessings Heather
You were so dear to my heart. So many wonderful memories of the fun times we had. God blessed me the day you came into my life 20 plus years ago.
Love you, until we meet again 💖
Oh where do I begin? Miss Dee would light up with love and kindness for all of us at Dr. Williams Office. She loved our patients and they loved her. We were family. She was a MiMi to my kids too. I will forever cherish all her stories. I always teased her that she was a teenager deep down, trapped in an adult body. I loved her fun loving and giving spirit. What a treasure to have been a part of her beautiful life. I love you Miss Dee!
Dee, I met you at the Senior Activity Center in the exercise room a few years ago. You loved walking on the treadmill and always had a good friend with you, a book. You loved reading, painting and good movies. I remember seeing Woodlawn with you and Marilyn. It took place in Birmingham and what a significant time in American history. You introduced me to Lonesome Dove, one of your all time favorites. Dee, we shared sports as well, texting back and forth during the Astros games. Such good times. I admired your spirit and will miss you dearly.
May you be blessed with the warmth of God”s ❤️ and eternal life.
Doris was a ray of sunshine whenever she came to visit us in the library. We especially loved having her be a part of storytimes with her great granddaughter, Emma. Her giving spirit will be missed.
I just found out today about Dee’s passing. I met Dee at our Seniors paint class and we were instant friends. She always made me laugh. It was a true joy being with her. She always reflected her love for our Lord Jesus Christ in her life and conversation. I have no doubt she is rejoicing with the angels. ……My Dearest friend and sister in Christ….you will be missed. I look forward to seeing you again on the other side.
Mimi,
I will always cherish all of our memories. Like our phone calls; where you taught me sign language with the books you mailed me, where you talked to me about working at the eye dr, when you mailed photos and told me all about your bird houses, and so much more…. I am so grateful that you had such a big impact on my life. I will never forget the memories I have with you. You used to mail me the most fun bird houses to paint, I also loved that you mailed me homeade birthday cakes, and how you always sent crazy socks, hair accessories, and all the things you knew I loved for my birthday. You always wanted to have fun, there was absolutely nothing that you thought you were too old to particioate it. You taught me so many things, but you especially taught me to always live life to the absolute fullest and love with my whole heart.
Until we meet again ❤ Tay-Tay
