Lawrence “Larry” Lonero
Lawrence “Larry” Lonero passed away at his residence surrounded by family on Thursday, August 1, 2019 after a long illness. He was born on June 29, 1934 in Columbus, Ohio, the youngest of two sons. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio, Anchorage, Alaska and Atlanta, Georgia where he graduated high school from St. John’s College. He then attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1958.
Upon graduation from West Point he entered the US Air Force. He was initially assigned to Strategic Air Command at Offutt AFB in Omaha, NE. He was soon assigned to the USAF space program and transferred to Patrick AFB in Florida near Cape Canaveral. In 1965 he transferred to the Manned Spacecraft Center (now Johnson Space Center) in Houston. He was honorably discharged in 1966 and earned several awards and medals during his service in the United States Air Force.
After separation from the USAF Larry stayed with NASA as a civilian contractor in Houston. He was a mission controller during the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. Among the many missions he participated in Apollo 11 and Apollo 13 were his finest. He, along with his fellow Apollo 13 mission control teammates, were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for their success in bringing the Apollo 13 crew safely back to earth. He was instrumental in the development of the Space Shuttle program and continued to work on the shuttle program in various positions until his retirement from NASA (STSOC) in 1997.
Larry was very active in the League City community in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and assisted in the construction of the “new” church on Walker St. He was involved in various little league organizations in various capacities. He participated in League City politics assisting in the campaigns for Mayor Johnny Arolfo. Having a last name that ended in “o” placed him firmly in the League City Italian clan.
Larry was also a successful businessman and entrepreneur. He was a founder of Clear Lake Aviation, Inc., an airplane dealership, in the 1970’s. In a few short years Clear Lake Aviation grew into one of the largest Grumman American and Cessna dealers in the country. In 1969, he founded Lonero Tax Service, a tax preparation firm. He ran Lonero Tax Service until his retirement in 2013.
Larry was a veteran and patriot and prominently flew the American flag year around. He had many friends throughout his lifetime and cherished them all. He loved to help others and was a generous soul.

Larry was an absolute gentleman and a true American hero!
Larry, thank you for your service. You were an absolute gentleman and a true American Hero!!!
Our deepest condolences to you upon the passing of Larry Lonero Sr. What a gentleman and a scholar. We were neighbors with the Lonero’s in sixties having moved from Florida to Houston with the Space Program like the Lonero’s. Many memories from those days. Mr. Lonero use to setup an incredible nativity scene in the front yard every year at Christmas. As a kid, I was so fascinated by the level of detail. My Lonero was a perfectionist at everything he did. He was always so generous with his time and like a fixture at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. You would always see him there working on one project or another. As a kid, I thought he was a pretty cool when he bought that awesome Mach 1 Mustang. He was all around a fantastic human being. He had just about every gift that God bestows upon a person including longevity. He was also a patriot who served his country with honor and distinction. Sorry to the family for your loss. My father, Jim Weldon, who was the same age as Larry, was an electrical engineer and graduate of Georgia Tech University. He worked for NASA 35 years. He passed away in 2016. God Bless. Jim

Larry was an amazing man who lead an incredible life. I met Larry while working for Rockwell (STSOC) during the Space Shuttle program. It was my first “real” job and Larry was an outstanding mentor. He gave me some of the best advice I have ever received and inspired me with his enthusiasm and dedication. He had many skills and talents that I admired. I will always fondling remember his elaborate Christmas decorations. God bless you Lonero family!
My sincere condolences. He was a special man who led a life of service. Prayers for all who knew and loved him.
Larry will be truly missed ~ he won the Christmas lighting contest year after year on the inside and outside of his home. Wow it was a sight to see. This is how we met as I was the judge of the lighting contest. We stayed in touch and I pray he is at peace. Larry Jr ~ god bless your family.
I am saddened to learn of Larry Lonero’s passing. We were West Point classmates and friends during our four years as Cadets, and I enjoyed his friendship and sense of humor. Larry was commissioned in the Air Force, and I was commissioned in the Army, so we never met after graduation, but I remember him well, and only regret that we were not able to continue our friendship after graduation. From the personal history in his obituary, one cannot but see the outstanding person that he was, and I am proud to have known him as a West Point classmate and friend.
