Patsy Marjorie Marguerite King Mitchell peacefully passed away on May 6, 2018.
The second of three children from the union of Roy P. King and Francis Marguerite Starrett King, Patsy was born August 13, 1938 in Bowie County, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother George C. King and his wife Judy. After graduating from Polytechnic High School, Patsy married James N. Mitchell, Jr. and started their family in Fort Worth. As young adults they moved to Abilene, New York state, and Northern Virginia. In each location they developed many lifelong friendships and helped establish local churches of Christ while working and raising their family. In 1978, job transfers brought them back to Texas. They celebrated 62 years of marriage this year.
Continuing to cherish the memory of Patsy are her husband, James, daughter, Linda Brown, and son, R. Dru Mitchell (Tammy). She was especially proud of the talents and accomplishments of her four grandchildren; Alleks Kornbaum (Will), Laura DeTorres (Alex), Brice and Conor Mitchell. She dearly loved her sister Debra J. Newman, her nieces and nephews, Julie Wyatt, Jeff King, Donna Escover, and Jennifer Gilbreath. Patsy loved and trusted Brandy Whitfield, her devoted caregiver and daily companion. The family appreciates all that was done through Kindred Hospice to keep Patsy comfortable. For the generous time, efforts, visits and prayers of dear friends and neighbors, the family is forever grateful.
Teaching Bible classes to ladies or little ones was always a joy for Patsy. She expressed her love through serving others in many ways including regularly inviting guests for Sunday lunch, hosting showers and fellowships, leading ladies’ retreats, organizing waffle dinners after caroling, hosting ladies’ teas, baking pecan pies, sending cards, taking teenagers to Abilene Christian University’s High School days and directing weddings at her church. She was an avid Bible student and her daily prayer lists for others often filled several pages. Patsy’s total character was saturated with love. Her spirit of gratitude toward all creation led her to care for many animals over the years. She will be missed by her “baby dog”, Holly.
Patsy’s career took her many places. Her fondest career memories were serving in Washington, DC at the Department of Agriculture, and as facilities manager at NASA after moving to Houston. She made dear friendships everywhere she worked and volunteered. She was an active volunteer for Clear Lake Kiwanis, Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership foundation and served as the Texas Commander for the Disabled Veterans Auxiliary 2001-2002. After retirement she worked to educate people on the importance of good nutrition. She loved to travel and enjoyed a trip of a lifetime with James to Belgium, Netherlands and Germany. However, her favorite trips were with the family to the outer banks of North Carolina.

Patsy enjoyed her flowers while she was living. In lieu of flowers at this time and to honor Patsy’s life of service and her values, the family request memorials be sent in her name to:

Patsy and the family have precious memories spent in the Shenandoah valley at Camp Wamava. Patsy served as a cook, “nurse” and Bible class teacher while Linda and Dru developed wonderful friendships and memories. Patsy earned a reputation as a creative camp cook and the endearing nickname of Prune Juice Mitchell for distributing prune juice for junk food tummy trouble. The family supported the camp year-round by caring for the camp horses at their farm in the winter months and James served on the board of directors for several years. Camp WaMaVa’s vision is: “To make Camp WaMaVA a sanctuary where all can experience the love of God” and their mission is “to provide a safe environment where each camper is appreciated, where play is important, where lifelong friendships are forged and where a relationship with God is strengthened.”

This organization serves those that are faced with unexpected disasters with new usable goods and food within hours of a disaster. Patsy always had a heart to help whoever she could and as soon as she could get there. The Disaster Relief group will provide for those in a timely and resourceful way. Many truckloads were delivered to assist after Hurricane Harvey hit Houston area.

The Celebration of Patsy Mitchell’s life will be held at 2pm on Sunday, May 27, at the Clear Lake church of Christ, El Dorado Blvd, Houston. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-2 at the church.
