Wendell “Jack” Lawing
Wendell “Jack” Lawing, 92, born June 5, 1925 in Ft. Worth TX, passed away October 22, 2017 in Houston TX. Jack was a resident of Pearland, TX for over thirty years and was formerly of Houston TX. He retired from the Conoco Oil Company. Jack attended First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Pearland Masonic Lodge.
Jack was one 5 children. He grew up in Ft. Worth, TX and graduated from Ft Worth Polytechnic where he met his beloved Evelyn. Jack and Evelyn married at the age of 20 and 18, respectively. They attended business college together after their marriage.
For over 30 years Jack worked for Conoco Oil Company and held many different positions within the TBA (Tire, Battery, Accessories) department before retiring. He was respected for his analytical abilities and integrity. Prior to working for Conoco, he worked as a bookkeeper in a lumberyard and had impeccable penmanship.
After Jack’s retirement from Conoco, he developed his golf game and played several times a week at the Texaco Country Club in east Houston. Jack enjoyed traveling with his wife Evelyn, spending time with his grandchildren and having breakfast at his favorite place, Tel-wink Grill. He loved the Houston Texans and they both kept up with the Houston Astros.
Jack is preceded in death by his wife of seventy-one years, Evelyn Lawing; parents, Claude and Della Lawing and his brothers and sisters.
Jack leaves behind his son, Keith Lawing and his wife, Cathy; grandchildren: John Gholson, Robert Lawing and Virginia Childs; step-grandchildren: Dustin Ballinger and Brittany Wilcox; step-great grandchildren: Emily Ballinger and Haley Ballinger.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 6-8pm at Crowder Funeral Home. Funeral service will begin Friday, October 27, 2017 at 10am in the chapel of Crowder Funeral Home in Pearland. Entombment to follow at Forest Park East Cemetery.
The Pearland Masonic Lodge will be serving as pallbearers.
Dear Keith and family, I hope you know how much we loved your folks. I just happened to google Jack’s name today and found that he had passed in October. We’ve been wondering how he was doing. I remember so well in the 90s when I’d stay with your folks in Pearland and your daddy would be up at the crack of dawn with the political news shows and I’d watch with him while I drank my tea. He knew he’d get a chuckle or two out of me when he tried to convert me to his staunch political views. There would be times he’d take me to Hobby Airport and we’d listen to Rush even though he knew I’d jump out of the truck if I got a chance. Your folks were such good people and we loved them dearly. They’ll have places in our hearts forever.
I just wanted to record my personal thoughts on the reading of Jack’s obituary.
Jack was a really special guy in my life. Although we lived far apart, we kept in touch, and saw each other when it was possible. Jack lived life in all the right ways. He enjoyed his family and friends. His smile just always seemed to be there. He was kind and generous; he was fun to be around. He and Evelyn brought my in-laws to Tucson for a visit at a time when they could not have made the trip alone. I will always be grateful for that act, done in kindness.
Jack and I occasionally exchanged Masonic memories, and stories. Rest in peace, Brother.
